  1. Brooks in the bushes..published at 08:26 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Koepka E (1)

What did we say early about hitting the ball right...

Brooks Koepka has just found out why as he's missed the second fairway to the right, ended up in a bush and now is playing his third towards the green.

  2. Injured Rose out of The Openpublished at 08:21 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Bad news for Justin Rose as he's been forced to withdraw from The Open just before his scheduled tee time due to a back injury.

  3. Simpson goes three underpublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Simpson -3 (7)

Webb Simpson is flying as he now picks up another birdie on the seventh and the 2012 US Open champion now holds a two-shot lead at The Open.

Scoring conditions seem ideal this morning and Simpson is taking full advantage.

No doubt this will be a popular group to watch this morning.

Three of the European Ryder Cup team who won at Le Golf National in 2018 head out together, as Justin Rose gatecrashes Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood's bromance.

Molinari has struggled to rediscover the form that saw him lift the Claret Jug that same year and currently sits 183rd in the world, having missed the cut in three of his past four majors.

Fleetwood met with young Scottish golfers earlier this week as part of the Golf Foundation and HSBC's Golf Roots initiative, and has been in typically laid back form in the build-up.

  6. Bryson misses birdie puttpublished at 08:07 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    DeChambeau E (1)

Shot of the day so far from Bryson DeChambeau on the first, as he manages to impart some spin on his ball with a steep downswing and a puff of dust off the turf as he gouges his ball towards the first green.

The ball lands, digs in and spins back more than any we've seen so far today, but just when it looks like it might drop it just lips out.

It looks a certain birdie but it's a bad putt from the big-hitting American who pushes it wide and misses out on a superb chance to start with a birdie.

  7. Poulter's flirtation with infamypublished at 08:03 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

I had the incredible honour to play the Old Course a couple of months ago. A caddie told me 'left is right, right is..." well, let's not go there.

He was referring to where to aim with your tee shot on all the holes bar the eighth, ninth and 10th. The idea being that right is generally heading to the rough or out of bounds, while left is heading to the inner parts of the course.

But, if you dare venture to the right, then you generally have a better line into the greens.

Anyway, Ian Poulter took the "left is right" mantra to the extreme on the first. Ian Baker-Finch famously went out of bounds at the 1995 Open - Poults almost suffered the same fate this morning, and was left with a tricky wedge shot that crossed the meandering Swilcan Burn four times.

There are no pictures on the scorecard though and given only two players have birdied the first so far, he's not losing ground.

For a moment there the fans behind the first green thought Bryson DeChambeau’s chipped approach was spinning into the cup. A collective gasp echoing across the Old Course. Delightful. Less so the birdie putt that followed…

Can’t deny I’m fascinated by Bryson DeChambeau, for better or worse he’s just… different?!

The American was down on the putting green near the first tee super early this morning, obviously trying to figure something out with his stroke.

Equally fascinating is John Daly and the former Open champ doesn’t disappoint with his day one outfit. Snazzy pants on point. And, after Paul Lawrie, he gets the biggest cheer on the first tee so far today.

  10. Birdie for Simpsonpublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Simpson -2, Lawrie +2 (5)

Webb Simpson gets his second birdie of the day to go to two under and lead The Open by one.

Paul Lawrie also picks up a birdie on the par-five fifth playing alongside Simpson and that will help the Scotsman after a rough start.

  11. The Steel City at St Andrewspublished at 07:49 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is leading the way for golf in Sheffield, but he's not the only one from the Steel City in St Andrews this week.

And golfing fans of the city are very happy about that.

    The new home of golf?

    Daly, DeChambeau, Tringale (07:52 BST)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

This must be a nutritionist's nightmare - in one corner, Bryson DeChambeau, who fuelled his bulk during the pandemic with a 3,000-3,500 calorie daily diet that packed in 400g of protein, more than four times his recommended intake, including up to seven protein shakes a day.

In the other corner, John Daly, a man who during this year's PGA Championship reportedly smoked 21 cigarettes, drank 12 cans of Diet Coke and ate six packets of peanut M&Ms in one round.

The breakfast of major champions, of which both these players are - Daly winning his second major here in 1995 and DeChambeau clinching the 2020 US Open.

Both also share a love for booming drives, with a video of Daly lashing a ball over a busy motorway in the US doing the rounds earlier this month. This could be fun.

  13. No low profile for Reedpublished at 07:40 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Reed (07:41)

Unlike Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed has not exactly been keeping a low profile at St Andrews this week with his outfit fully decked out in multiple LIV Golf logos.

He's about to tee off so his reception will be interesting, as will his outfit....

  14. Double trouble for Lawriepublished at 07:39 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Lawrie +3, Simpson -1

Paul Lawrie's been in a spot of bother down the fourth. He finds the rough off the tee, hacks forward 100 yards or so into one of the 112 bunkers that litter the Old Course and from there can only advance his ball another 10 yards.

It all leads to a double-bogey six for the 1999 champion.

His playing partner Webb Simpson takes the regulation four strokes from tee to hole to remain one of only two players under par so far.

  15. Low profile for Leftypublished at 07:37 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

Phil Mickelson has kept a low profile so far this week, no chance of that once the tournament begins.

There are not too many fans left in the grandstand by the first tee to see him off, and those that are left serve up a mixed reaction for the American.

Lefty strides off down the fairway offering a thumb up to those shouting his name.

Light stubble, aviators on. Some things never change.

  16. Mickelson underwaypublished at 07:33 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Phil Mickelson gets a polite round of applause when he's announced on the tee, and he responds by ripping a nice fairway wood down the right-hand side of the first fairway.

He also gives his trademark thumbs up to the crowd as he strides away down after his ball.

  17. Par for Poulterpublished at 07:29 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Poulter E (1)

Well, 'The Postman' may have delivered his tee shot to the wrong address, but he air mailed in a nice second shot after getting a fortunate drop from the very edge of St Andrews.

Ian Poulter than stamps his authority on the green with two putts for par - nothing to write home about that first hole though.

    Any more post-based puns?

  18. Selected early tee timespublished at 07:25 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

A few selected tee times coming up to look out for. The crowd reception for Phil Mickelson will be interesting so don't miss that coming up shortly...

    • 07:30 Mickelson
    • 07:52 DeChambeau
    • 08:03 Koepka, C Smith
    • 08:14 Fleetwood, Molinari, Rose
    • 08:25 MacIntyre
    • 09:58 McIlroy, Morikawa, Schauffele
    • 10:09 Hovland, Lowry, Thomas
  19. First birdie of the daypublished at 07:17 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Simpson -1 (3)

    The OpenImage source, Getty Images

Webb Simpson is a dark horse for many people here as he goes massively under the radar but has a great game for links golf - and is a major winner of course.

The American gets the first birdie of this 150th Open as he rolls in a putt for a three on the third. Your very, very early leader!

  20. LIV players heading outpublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

We’ve got a steady stream of LIV rebels heading out early this morning…

Ian Poulter is among them, game number four, before most of the field are even having their breakfast.

A few uneasy murmurs from the crowd underneath the light applause?

His tee shot bounded off left of the Swilcan Bridge.

“Go on, Postie,” chimes one fan. Might need airmail to loft it on from there.
