  1. Scheffler drops backpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hatton E, Niemann -2, Scheffler -3 (13)

The afternoon starters have struggled to make an impact at the top of the leaderboard, and Scottie Scheffler's run has been halted.

World number one Scheffler bogeys the par-four 13th and is now three under, five behind leader Cameron Young.

But the three-ball are looking in decent shape overall and Chile's Joaquín Niemann claims a second birdie in three holes to move to two under.

Tiger Woods and Max Homa wing their way down the 10th fairway and then the inevitable happens: one of the trio produces a duck-hook. Poor Matt Fitzpatrick.

The US Open champ gets a big break though, ending up between two gorse bushes and leaving him with a shot into the green.

He's the first to throw a dart, ending up close the bullseye. Woods and Homa get their eyes in, too.

Hello, hello! More birdie chances incoming.

Our feathery friends are starting to appear...

  4. Casey makes improbable parpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Casey -3 (14)

Paul Casey's had his struggles on the par-five 14th. His second went right, then his third went long. His fourth was played from an incredibly awkward lie in the bunker, and he did well to get it to within 20 feet without ripping a hole in the middle of his trousers.

And he does even better with the flat stick, sinking the putt for an unlikely five! Remains three-under and right in the mix.

Over Tiger Woods' right shoulder on the 10th tee is a bloke wearing a duck's hat.

Yellow furry hat, complete with orange bill and flapping wings.

    Absolutely quackers.

Got to be on a stag do or a bet. Or are we missing something?

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III +2 (8)

Deary me! Jordan Spieth is down by the ninth green with his drive, but he overcooks his chip and it races past the flag, just about stopping short of the gorse bushes.

Heart-in-mouth moment for the Texan there. Getting out with par is going to be a struggle now.

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick +1, Homa E (9)

Surely now we're going to see out first birdie from this group.

Because it is driveable - the players have reached a point that the players are standing to the side of the hole to let the next group drive up. It is hard to maintain a rhythm with all this stop/start golf.

There is the first roar for Tiger Woods today - and it has taken nine holes to come.

A little clenched fist of celebration from Max Homa after he rolled in for birdie at nine. Not a man to go overboard… Tiger Woods got a good look at that line and wriggled in his own birdie, the first or the day, and those around the ninth green were greeted with a beaming smile. Will they start dropping now?

  9. Birdies!!published at 17:51 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick +1, Homa level (9)

You know the old saying about London buses... will three birdies arrive at once?

    Easy as one, two... oh.

Homa gets the momentum going by nailing his putt beautifully, Woods following suit. That even raises a smile from the previously-disconsolate American.

Fitzpatrick has the easiest birdie putt of the trio and misses. Knew a full house would be too much to ask.

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick, Homa +1 (8)

Homa goes first with a lob wedge and gets to about 10 feet.

Will Woods raise him? Yes! He goes inside with a punchy bump and run.

Fitzpatrick goes last, with even less loft, and he goes closest,

    Tweet-tweet... birdie alert!!

  11. Rahm drops backpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III +2 (8)

Jon Rahm faces an immensely difficult chip from behind the green on the eighth. He plays it well, but it still skips on by and he'll have around 15 feet for his par.

No - he starts it left and it stays out there. Bogey.

It's another dropped shot for Harold Varner III, though, while Jordan Spieth takes his par and moves on.

We've all been there, Georgia. Need someone to drop a banger and get this party started.

Either Homa, Woods or Fitzpatrick sinking an eagle chip from the right side of the ninth green would do the trick..

  13. 'Need one putt to drop, one birdie on the scorecards'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick, Homa +1 (8)

Ladies European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I am hoping that on the ninth which has been a driveable par four, I hope we see at least one birdie, but it has just been so quiet and so stale from everyone.

It is almost like one of those New Year's Eve parties that you have planned for months in advance and when you get there no-one's ready to party.

We were all looking forward to this - US Open champion (Fitzpatrick), Tiger, and they are not feeding off each other.

We need one putt to drop, one birdie on the scorecards and then hopefully we'll be up and running.

Hopefully our man Bysouth tucked into the box of treats. Sure he could do with a sugar rush. Been a longgggg day.

The trio of Woods, Fitzpatrick and Homa have been trekking for almost three hours and they still aren't halfway round.

The afternoon scoring has also been slow, too.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is only latecomer to muscle his way into the VIP party taking place at the the top of the leaderboard.

"Slow down ball," says Jon Rahm as the Spaniard nervously watches his approach to the par-three eighth. It lands on the green but skips through and narrowly avoids falling into the pot bunker.

Jordan Spieth is safely on board, while Harold Varner III's ball just trickles off long and left.

Matt Fitzpatrick’s caddie Billy Foster wasn’t hanging about on the eighth green, as the players were putting out he headed for the ninth tee, lifted the lid on a wicker basket and dug out a chocolate bar - who knew they were hiding in there?!

What has this group got to do to get a birdie?! (And don't say play better golf...)

Matt Fitzpatrick almost breaks the duck with a 35-foot (ish) putt which follows a path with as many highs and lows as an Olympic ski run.

In the end, the ball runs out of gas just inches from its destination.

Pars also follow for Max Homa, who diligently goes up and down from way south, and Tiger Woods after another low punch and putt combo.

    McIlroy -6 (66)

Ah yes, we all remember Rory's 63-80 start to the 2010 Open.

That 80 came in brutal conditions on the Old Course, though, so with the forecast looking fairly decent for tomorrow, I'm going to stick my neck out and say McIlroy will negotiate this year's second round in a much more convincing manner.

    Famous last words...

Tiger Woods was not happy with his tee shot at the par-three eighth - it set off on track and the crowd gave it a cheer, but the American is a wise old head around this course and knew it was travelling beyond and wide of its intended target.

He marched off towards the green with purpose, so at least there seems no issues there at the minute.
