  1. 'Another calamitous hole for Woods'published at 17:28 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

Neither Tiger Woods or Matt Fitzpatrick will be happy. Woods has had another calamitous hole on the seventh.

It was a double bogey so now six over par.

Matt Fitzpatrick couldn't take advantage of his birdie opportunity.

It is just the nature of St Andrews and you just need to keep that concentration - we've been talking about the pace of pay, but you just have to do it.

    Spieth -2, Rahm -2, Varner III +1 (7)

Lovely touch from Jordan Spieth, who cosies his birdie down to gimme range from the front of the green.

It's a misread from Jon Rahm, however, and he looks perplexed as he taps in for par.

Harold Varner III clipped a delightful approach just beyond the pin but misses his tiddler for birdie! What a chance that was.

Right then, can the only par three on the front nine of the Old Course breathe some life into this group?

Homa has the honour and strikes the ball well, only to see the wind intervene and not give him the rewards it deserves.

Ball hits the right side of the green and disappears down the slope.

Next up is Fitzpatrick. The Yorkshireman doesn't look overly happy but gets a hearty round of applause as ball hits the green.

Woods also receives a warm show of support, even though his ball doesn't stick on the short stuff.

The St Andrews crowd knows their favourite needs a morale boost.

    Spieth -2, Rahm -2, Varner III +1 (6)

Oh no. Jordan Spieth hooks his fairway metal off the seventh tee into the thick stuff.

The lie looks OK and he's able to rip through the ball well enough, but it's a tad short and rests up on the top of the bank in front of the green.

Jon Rahm's in much better shape, though. From 91 yards, he controls a wedge beautifully and he'll have around 15 feet for another birdie.

  5. Double bogey for Woodspublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick, Homa +1 (7)

An aggressive birdie putt from Max Homa initially looks to be racing past the pin, but sticks on the brakes to leave him with a simple return.

That's after Matt Fitzpatrick also sticks a decent effort up the hill, leaving him too walking off with another par.

No such luck for Tiger Woods. He's already past that point and the best he can hope for is a bogey.

Nope, that's not dropping. A sullen, almost mournful look for Woods as he trudges off to the eighth tee.

    Woods +4, Fitzpatrick, Homa +1 (6)

Somebody, something, anything, needs to spark this group into life.

Max Homa looks the most likely to be firelighter.

A flighted approach into the pin doesn't hold as much as he'd like but still gives him the best chance of making a putt drop.

Tiger Woods goes old school by using a five iron for a chip and run, giving him a chance at least of walking off with a bogey.

  7. DJ going OKpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    D Johnson -3, Leishman +2 , Scott +1 (12)

Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson is looking in good shape.

He clinches back-to-back birdies with a three on the 12th and is now three under.

    Woods +4, Fitzpatrick, Homa +1 (6)

Contrasting facial expressions on the sixth. Matt Fitzpatrick cracks a smile after finding the fairway, Tiger Woods with a face stonier than if it been cut into Mount Rushmore.

Woods goes way left with his tee-shot, leaving him in a bunker where he's probably never ever been in his life.

A spoonful of medicine is required. He knocks out to safety and then miscalculates his approach. Oh dear.

Needs a lot of work to avoid another double bogey...

  9. Birdies for Rahm & Spiethpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -2, Rahm -2, Varner III +1 (6)

Jordan Spieth pours his birdie putt at the sixth right into the heart.

A handy graphic from Sky tells us that Spieth has recorded 130 birdies at The Open since 2013, 19 more than Henrik Stenson. Spieth, the 2017 champion at Birkdale, certainly thrives on the links.

Can Jon Rahm follow him in? He can indeed! Both players move to two-under with Harold Varner III one-over after his second bogey.

A couple of beautiful approaches from Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth at the sixth!

They both squandered golden opportunities on the previous hole, but surely they'll tidy those ones up.

There we go! Prime seats for those surrounding the sixth green, they’ve seen a rare putt drop for Tiger Woods this afternoon… the rest of the course knew something good had happened by the cheer that went up.

  12. 'Something goes Tiger's way'published at 17:04 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +4, Fitzpatrick, Homa +1 (6)

Right now we are watching someone who looks a little punch drunk, but for the first time this round something goes Tiger's way and he knocks in it. A quick wave to the crowd, and it is enough to get him four over.

  13. Postpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +4, Fitzpatrick, Homa +1 (6)

Max Homa goes first with the birdie putts on the sixth, not quite getting the line right and having to settle for another par.

Perhaps Matt Fitzpatrick can get a read from his playing partner's effort. Hmmm, not really. Another four.

Back to Tiger Woods.... he's aiming to save par.

Those who watched Woods practise spoke positively about his form, but it's not materialised so far today.

Not sure if that is a physical thing or just a lack of competitive action.

Either way, the old spark isn't there. The fighting spirit is, though, Woods dropping in the par putt to save further damage to his scorecard.

  15. Parry pars the lastpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Parry -3 (69)

There's no closing birdie for John Parry but it's still a thoroughly satisfying opening round for the English debutant.

    He'll be thrilled with that.

Just shows you how tricky these greens are, the players are being buffeted by the wind.

Both Spieth and Rahm miss and stomp dejectedly to the next hole.

Uh oh. The grimace followed by the look to the floor is a killer combo.

But that's where Tiger Woods is at the moment. Tough to watch.

With Matt Fitzpatrick and Max Homa sitting pretty about 15 feet short of the pin, Woods can't join them on the short stuff as his approach lacks oomph.

  18. Frustrating pars for Spieth & Rahmpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm -1, Varner III E (5)

One of St Andrews' many quirks is that it only has two par-fives and two par-threes.

The first of the long holes is the fifth and neither Jordan Spieth or Jon Rahm can take advantage of it, with both players watching short birdie putts slide past.

Spieth, as is his wont, conducts a thorough post-putt review with caddie Michael Greller while Rahm just stews quietly at the side of the green.

Hearty reception for Matt Fitzpatrick off the sixth tee as the US Open champion strokes a booming drive away, and a throaty roar for Tiger Woods follows.

They’re a lively bunch behind that tee box. Not far from the refreshment stands, either…
