    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick E, Homa E (13)

It's a waiting game on the 14th as a traffic jam piles up. Fitzpatrick is the furthest back in this group, stood patiently as he awaits the green light.

Woods is way ahead after that huge drive, which carried over 300 yards thanks to the increasing winds and then bounded along 100 yards on the firm fairway.

This hanging around must be so frustrating.

  2. Solid Scheffler in the huntpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Hatton -2, Niemann -3, Scheffler -4 (18)

There's a few interesting contenders who have finished day one at four under, four shots behind leader Cameron Young, including Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and amateur Barclay Brown.

Joining them is world number one Scottie Scheffler, who pars the last to seal a round of 68.

England's Tyrrell Hatton knocks in a birdie to finish on two under, with Joaquin Niemann on three under.

Tiger must still be in decent spirits as he’s just said something that’s cracked Matt Fitzpatrick up on their walk down the 14th fairway. Though we’ve now got two groups stacked up waiting to play their shots. A lot of traffic…

  5. Woods hits 412-yard drivepublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick E, Homa E (13)

Hand coming off the grip is never a good look. Matt Fitzpatrick looks at his driver with disdain after dragging his tee-shot left.

Playing partner Max Homa has driven well today, all year in fact, and his latest offering off the 14th tee is greeted with admiration.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, absolutely SMASHES a drive. Wow... he's knocked it 412 yards. FOUR HUNDRED AND TWELVE.

That's like one of those intended to hurry along the slow coaches ahead.

  6. Bogeys for Rahm & Spiethpublished at 19:31 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -1, Rahm E, Varner III +2 (13)

Oh no, another putt stays above ground for an increasingly irritated Jon Rahm, who slips back to level par after failing to get down in two from around 80 feet.

Similar story from Jordan Spieth, I'm afraid, only his ball dipped below the surface before deciding to throw itself back out.

    Spieth can't believe it.

A resigned shrug from Tiger as another putt slides away. It’s been one of those days. He’s keeping the young lad carrying the scoreboard busy, mind.

    Dinwiddie -4 (10)

What is happening? It's just gone 7:20pm and the final two groups have only just passed the turn.

Having come straight into the Open from Wimbledon, it seems they've introduced a de facto night session here too...

But the late finish will be worth sticking around for if England's Robert Dinwiddie continues his charge up the leaderboard.

The 39-year-old from Barnard Castle has knocked in a birdie on the 10th to move up to tied fourth.

No need to test your eyesight. It's true!

  9. Woods' woes continuepublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +6, Fitzpatrick E, Homa E (13)

We may have yet to finish round one but it's safe to say that Tiger Woods does not look like adding to his haul of 15 majors. In fact, you wouldn't bet on him making the cut at this stage,

The champion at St Andrews in 2000 and 2005 has been all at sea since finding the water on the way to a double bogey at the first.

Woods found the rough with his drive at 13, managed to make the green in two but three-putted from 36 yards and is now six over. That's 14 behind leader Cameron Young.

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III +2 (12)

Jon Rahm is left down the 13th, way left. But with the pin on the right-hand side and his ball sitting nicely, it's not bad at all, which is why he won't be overly pleased with finishing up some 70 feet beyond the target.

Spieth goes long, too. Lag putting skills will be tested here, folks.

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick, Homa E (12)

Matt Fitzpatrick got a member’s bounce if ever there was one, it looked like that scooted round the back of the TV tower, somehow managing to avoid spectators en route and landing 50 yards shy of the 13th green.

His caddie Billy Foster has a giggle with a few fans, pretending to hurry his charge up as he sizes up his shot from just inside the ropes. He can afford to laugh after that break.

  12. Casey's back-nine bluespublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Casey -1 (71)

Paul Casey's dinner's not going to taste so sweet after that back nine.

Home in 39, Casey will sign for a 71 which, quite frankly, is disappointing effort given he was four-under through eight.

  13. Spieth birdies 12published at 19:06 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Spieth -2, Rahm -1, Varner III +2 (12)

We've seen so many players off the back of the 12th green today, and Jon Rahm joins the club.

The Spaniard's lag is a good one, nudging it down to around four feet.

And what of young Master Spieth? Well, he was long off the tee, but despite clipping the gorse with his backswing, he manages to chip back down to around six feet - and makes the putt.

Rahm's putt shaves the left edge, though. The world number three hasn't been too sharp on the greens today, but he's done well to stick around under par.

Oh Tiger is furious. What a chance. So unlike the Tiger Woods we have known for so many years but he will settle for par.

I would say that this is further evidence of maintaining concentration through this marathon.

  16. Birdie for Fitzpatrickpublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick E, Homa E (12)

OK, the three-ball behind have teed off and, while Spieth and Rahm hit the putting surface, none of them are stopping the group ahead from holing out.

Fitzpatrick is allowed to tap in first to hurry things along, before Homa drags his birdie putt and settles for a par.

Next up is Woods, with his trouser legs are flapping like a hummingbird's wings.

Oh dear... he's pulled his birdie putt left and walks after the ball as soon as he connects. Not a good sign.

  17. Mullarney motoring alongpublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Mullarney -3 (8)

Ronan Mullarney was two-under a few moments ago. He's just picked up another.

The former R&A Foundation scholar, who shared second place in the 36-hole qualifying competition at Prince's in Kent, was one over through four but has played his last four holes in four under.

    His world ranking? 1806.

Matt Fitzpatrick shows the touch of a newly-crowned major champion. Tiger Woods show the deftness of someone who’s won 15 of them… a couple of delightful chips from the back of the green.

They’re letting the group behind tee off to try and speed this glacial pace of play up, so have plenty of time to ponder their birdie putts.

  19. Casey drops another onepublished at 18:53 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Casey -1 (17)

Paul Casey is the latest to pay a visit to the dreaded Road Hole bunker, but unlike Si Woo Kim, there are no fireworks from the Englishman and he slumps to another bogey.

It's all gone badly awry for Casey on the back nine, with three bogeys and no birdies.

  20. Postpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 14 July 2022

    Woods +5, Fitzpatrick +1, Homa E (11)

Woods goes first and knocks a delicate effort relatively close.

The key here is not letting the ball fly past the pin and slide off the upper tier of the green.

Homa has the toughest lie of the three, but shows nice control to leave him with a decent chance of a birdie.

Oooh, what a touch from Fitzpatrick! A gorgeous chip looks like it could drop but just falls short.

Before they hole out - or attempt to, at least - the group waits for Spieth, Rahm and Varner III to drive off behind them.
