    Smith -12, Young -11 (4)

The final pairing of Cameron Smith and Cameron Young have made steady, but far from spectacular, starts.

In fact, the pair - plus Rory McIlroy - are the only players in the top 20 not yet to have made a birdie today.

Current clubhouse leader Tommy Fleetwood was talking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

"Trying to improve very day and when we saw the early starters going out and shooting good scores - started really well and have made a nice move on Saturday.

    Some good momentum this year?

"It seems so, slowly and gradually. There have not been any fireworks but consistent and pretty solid It's been pleasing but would like to have those great weeks that haven't quite been there.

"I'll keep working hard an hopefully our time will come."

What does he think we will see in scores today?

"It will be interesting to see how the course plays this afternoon. There's birdie chances on that middle stretch but we'll see.

"It's not in my hands - we'll see what the positions are for tomorrow and go again."

I can confirm that Niall Horan is at St Andrews today (see 4.30pm entry). He's been hanging out with Olympic curling gold medallist Eve Muirhead, who is here on BBC Radio 5 Live duties.

Niall founded a golf management company a few years ago and caddied for Rory McIlroy at the Masters par-three contest in 2015

Eve has been working with the radio commentary team this week and you can listen to that coverage by clicking on the link on this page.

    Hovland -12, McIlroy -10 (4)

Hovland from 200 yards on the fifth. He gives it an almighty smack and it's another fine effort from the Norwegian, creeping on to the front of the green.

McIlroy follows his playing partner to the same portion of the green, but he's a few feet outside Hovland, who will get a handy read from the Northern Irishman's putt.

  5. Pars for Smith and Youngpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -11 (4)

Touch! A caress of the wedge from the back of the fourth green leaves Cameron Young looking likely to walk off with a par.

Twenty feet or so separates Cameron Smith and level par for the day. Going uphill, he gives the ball a good shove but it doesn't trouble the door.

Young confidently knocks in his par putt as predicted.

  6. Scheffler getting in touchpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -10, Scheffler -10 (5)

Scottie Scheffler rolls in a marvellous curling birdie putt on the par-five fifth when he'd left himself a tricky up-and-down from just short of the green.

DJ has a similar putt but bumps it through the break and now both of the Americans are on 10 under.

  7. Postpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -11 (3)

Cameron Young is statistically one of the longer drivers on the tour, but not always the most accurate.

He's gone a little wayward on four, ending up in the bunker. But he splashes out to good effect and has a decent chance of going up and down for the par.

Cameron Smith, meanwhile, is eyeing up a birdie to wipe out that opening bogey.

  8. Lowry drops anotherpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Lowry -7 (15)

Oh dear. Another shot goes for Shane Lowry, this time at the very difficult 15th.

That's a shame. He was absolutely flying an hour ago after that eagle-eagle burst around the turn.

  9. Postpublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Hovland -12, McIlroy -10 (4)

Hovland and McIlroy on the tee of the par-five fifth.

Smokeshow. They're both well down there. I smell an eagle putt or two coming up...

  10. Birdies for Cantlaypublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Cantlay -10 (6)

Woah! Patrick Cantlay has put his foot on the gas. Back-to-back birdies on five and six move the American into tied fourth with Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy.

Andrew Priestley: Hovland the early mover in the pairing with Rory, sinking putts from different post codes. Rory has hit all GIR and given himself looks at birdies on every hole, but just can’t get the ball to drop yet. Early days, but great to see the leaderboard bunching-up.

  12. Hatton birdies fivepublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Hatton -8 (5)

It's been a sluggish start for Tyrrell Hatton. The Englishman was one-over through four but has picked up a timely birdie at the fifth.

    Hopefully that gets him going.

It should be the fashion police that are out in force around St Andrews today - but what's worse, Poulter's trousers or Smith's shirt?

  14. 'No reason why McIlroy cannot finish strong'published at 16:39 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Hovland -12, McIlroy -10 (4)

    Lydia Hall
Ladies European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

A fantastic putt from Hovland again, so much confidence from Hovland's putting - puts him with a share of the lead.

It is not happening yet for Rory but we're not yet through a third of the round. There is no reason he can't finish strong.

He has to continue giving himself chances and giving himself as many birdie looks as possible. He's hitting fairways, he's hitting greens.

  15. Pars for Smith and Youngpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -11 (3)

You may have seen Cameron Smith knocked in putts totalling 253 feet yesterday - a PGA Tour record in a round.

Basically, he successfully putted the whole height of Canary Wharf.

A beautifully-judged putt from distance on the third green, leaves him with a simple tap-in for par and walking off with a laugh.

Perhaps he's not heard the news from up ahead...

Cameron Young doesn't commit enough to his birdie putt, watching the ball tail off right at the last moment.

  16. Postpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -12 (4)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

Viktor Hovland is a man on a mission. Four holes in and he’s already reeled in that lead. He whips out his yardage book and starts sizing up the fifth before Rory McIlroy even has a chance to putt out for par. Focus.

  17. Another chance gone for McIlroypublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -12 (4)

No, no, no. Hovland's flatstick might be red-hot, but McIlroy's yet to find his range on the green as another makeable birdie putt stays above ground.

He looks a little disgruntled already. Patience, Rory, that's the key...

  18. Scott in the sandpublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Scott -7 (5)

Adam Scott in real trouble on the fourth as he finds a fairway bunker - and as usual that costs him a shot. You just have to try and avoid them around here.

The former Masters champion responds nicely though with a birdie on five.

  19. Hovland ties for the leadpublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Hovland -12 (4)

OH MY WORD! Viktor Hovland drains another monster putt and moves into a tie for the lead on 12 under!

    What a move.

  20. 'Bit loose from Smith'published at 16:34 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -11 (2)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 Live

A lovely approach shot after Smith and Young launched monstrous drives. Young leaves himself with a very straightforward putt.

Smith faces a treacherous putt though - a little bit loose from the leader.
