    Smith -12, Young -11 (2)

Cameron Smith is not hitting the straps just yet.

After a beauty of a drive which leaves him just short of the cavernous Cartgate bunker, he can't get enough check on his chip and the ball bounds past the hole.

If there is a birdie coming here, the money would be lumped on Cameron Young who is well inside his playing partner.

  2. DJ drops a shotpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -10, Scheffler -9 (4)

Bad miss from DJ at the fourth stops his fine start - as he just doesn't hit it hard enough on that line and it catches a bit of the left edge but lips out.

  3. Fleetwood finishes with a flourishpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Fleetwood -9 (66)

Tommy Fleetwood is on the edge of the 18th green with a long eagle putt.

Hmmm, it's not his best, and he'll need a smooth stroke to salvage birdie.

But he gets it! That's a six-under 66 for Fleetwood and he should have a much later tee time tomorrow afternoon.

Our money is on Niall Horan.

Those Directioners need keeping under control.

Can't confirm whether our Alex is a fan or not.

Amid the scrum of reporters, photographers and general entourage following this group, there’s also a police presence in tow. That would suggest someone very important - more than merely these superstar golfers - is out around the Old Course.

  6. Pars for Smith and Youngpublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -11 (2)

As we suspected, Smith and Young (which sounds like a power-tool manufacturer) both scribble pars on the cards at the second.

  7. More flag huntingpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -11, Scheffler -9 (3)

Scheffler's 'dialled in' as they say as he attacks the third with similar gusto to the second - it's not as close but it's a decent birdie chance coming up.

Johnson was blocked out by a bush after making the mistake but still managed to find the green.

  8. 'Hovland assertive, McIlroy tentative'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -11 (3)

    Lydia Hall
Ladies European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a very assertive putt from Hovland.

I have thought about McIlroy he had looked really comfortable in the first two rounds, but it was a bit tentative. That wasn't a nice putt for him.

  9. Postpublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -11 (3)

Hovland, in the mood, rips a beauty down the fourth.

McIlroy, not quite in the mood after that poor birdie try on the last, pulls a fairway metal, much to the disappointment of the crowd surrounding the tee box.

Oh but they like it now! That's a cracker, and it ain't short either.

    Smith -12, Young -11 (1)

Cameron Young is putting from downtown.

Over 50 feet from the back of the second green, he lags it lovely. Should be a par.

Cameron Smith three-putted on the first, but looks to have rediscovered his touch with a decent long putt which ends up a few feet from the hole.

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -11 (3)

“Chance missed,” says one fan as Rory McIlroy’s birdie putt slides wide. And you’d imagine that’s just how the four-time major champion feels, especially after watching Viktor Hovland move to 11 under.

  12. Hovland birdies threepublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -11 (3)

What a putt, Viktor Hovland!! He drains a long one at the third and jumps to -11.

Can Rory follow him in? No! A gilt-edged chance passed up by the world number two.

  13. Birdie chance for Rorypublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10 (2)

Viktor Hovland's approach into three is safe. Very safe.

What can Rory do? It's just a flick from 63 yards. Good angle. Ooooh, it's well-judged and he leaves himself around eight feet below the hole for his first positive deviation from par this afternoon.

  14. 'Smith plays his shots by feel, not numbers'published at 16:19 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12 (1)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on Radio 5 Live

Cameron Smith likes to look at his target to get the feel of his shot.

He plays his shots by feel... and not by numbers which is what you have to do on this old course.

  15. Postpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -11

After decent drives from both men, we see Cameron Young less than happy with his approach on the second.

    He's gone long.

Cameron Smith is just in front of a path across the fairway, think he got relief from his initial resting point.

    Looks concrete down there.

Smith manages to get a good connection, though, and looks slightly pensive as eyes fix on his ball.

Pass the putter. He's on the green.

  17. WATCH: Back-to-back eagles for Shane Lowrypublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Lowry -8 (13)

    Back-to-back eagles are rare enough.

Back-to-back eagles on par-fours? Practically unheard of!

    Behold, the magician Shane Lowry.

    Cantlay -8 (4), Gooch -8 (3)

Plenty of Stars and Stripes on the leaderboard, including the next to the names of Patrick Cantlay and Talor Gooch.

The American pair have both birdied the third and move within striking distance early doors.

  19. Pieters settles for 67published at 16:12 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Pieters -7 (67)

Thomas Pieters rolls in a short birdie putt at the 18th to complete an impressive five-under 67.

It could have been lower though had it not been for three consecutive bogeys from the 15th.

  20. Postpublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10 (2)

Oooooh, Rory's 51-footer at the second was tracking nicely but comes up a few feet shy, and he taps in.

Viktor Hovland fails with his much more presentable birdie opportunity so it's on to the third.
