  1. Stunner from Schefflerpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -10, Scheffler -8 (2)

DJ knocked it close on the second, and Scheffler responds by almost holing out with his approach to the third!

We'll give him that one - birdie incoming.

DJ follows him in and produces another wonderful wedge shot - which rolls up to just a couple of feet outside Scheffler's effort.

  2. Bogey for Smithpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -11

    Ah. Sorry Cam Smith.

That straightforward par putt we mentioned? He missed it. Slightly tight start on the opening green for the leader.

Cam Young reduces the gap to a shot after two-putting on the first.

    Smith -13, Young -11

Cameron Smith's putter has been more reliable than a top-of-the-range sat nav.

More than often it sends the ball to its final destination without any detours.

His long birdie putt is left short but should be a par for one of the best putters in the game.

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10 (1)

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

Both Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy walked all the way up to the second green to take a look at the flag before traipsing back to their ball to play their approaches. That’s one way to bump up your step count.

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10 (1)

Hovland sends a crisply struck short iron zooming towards the flag at the second. It takes a firm bounce off the nose of the bunker and he'll have around 20 feet for a birdie.

McIlroy's drive has sat down in the rough a bit, but he muscles a wedge onto the right side of the putting surface, where his lag-putting - which has been glorious all week long - will be tested.

    Spieth -7 (9)

Eagle chance for 2017 champion Jordan Spieth on the ninth... the knees bend but the ball doesn't drop.

    Thought he had it.

Nevertheless he's three under today and building momentum nicely.

  7. Birdie putts for Smith and Youngpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -13, Young -11

Cameron Young to go for the green first. He's got 148 yards to go.

Lovely! A gentle swish of a short iron pitches pin-high and skids to a halt about seven feet away.

Can Cameron Smith match that? Not quite. He's a little more reserved with his approach, coming up about 25 feet short of the pin.

  8. Birdie for Johnsonpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -10, Scheffler -8 (2)

DJ aims a dart at the second flag and it leaves him merely a tap-in to move to 10 under - it really was a stunning approach.

Scheffler is miles away with his approach so has to settle for a par.

  9. Postpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10 (1)

Hovland sends a screamer of a drive down the left wing of the second fairway.

McIlroy's driving can be a huge advantage when he keeps it in play. Important to get a good one away early here.

Ooooh, it cuts back just enough and narrowly avoids the pot bunker. He's in good shape now, some 350 yards down there I might add!

  10. 'A real buzz now'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -13, Young -11

    Zane Scotland
Former European Tour player on BBC Radio 5 Live

There's a real buzz at the weekend of a major now.

They both looked like good strikes - just what both Smith and Young wanted to get their day started with.

    Smith -13, Young -11 (15:55 BST)

"On the tee, from the USA, Cam-e-ron Young!"

The American pegs up first as Cameron Smith takes one last look at the yardage book.

Remember: this is Young's first Open.

Any nerves? Nah. A slight pause at the top, a firm downswing and a lovely mid-iron which settles on the right side of the fairway.

That's the line which Smith likes the look of, too.

Confident start from the final pair.

  12. No opening birdie for McIlroypublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10 (1)

Viktor Hovland tidies up impressively from the back of the green and will card an opening par.

Can Rory McIlroy go one better and give the huge gallery following him an excuse to go wild with the leader standing back on the tee?

No, he can't, his putt grazes the left edge. Decent effort, but not good enough. It's as you were for the penultimate two-ball.

  13. Lowry drops backpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Lowry -8 (12)

Shane Lowry's come crashing down after the euphoric high of hitting back-to-back eagles at the ninth and 10th.

It's a dropped shot at 12 and he drops back to five off the lead.

That was sloppy - he was no more than 20 yards short of the green with his drive on the short par-four.

  14. WATCH: The best of Cameron Smith's second roundpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -13, Young -11 (15:55 BST)

Rory McIlroy is the man who the fans want to win, but Cameron Smith is the man to catch.

Watch the highlights of a stunning second round from the Australian.

    Warning: there are plenty.

  15. And then there were two (Camerons)...published at 15:52 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Smith -13, Young -11 (15:55 BST)

    Down to the final two.

The last men to go out are strolling towards the first tee. After a friendly fistbump, of course.

Cameron Smith is our halfway leader after shooting 64 yesterday to go two strokes clear of Cameron Young.

Will one of these two be leading the way going into tomorrow's fourth and final round?

    Let's find out...

  16. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10

A bit of adrenaline, perhaps? Viktor Hovland goes long at the first and faces a tricky test to avoid an early bogey.

Rory McIlroy crunches a confident second, though. He likes it, and so he should - it's around 15 feet away for an opening birdie.

  17. Postpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Johnson -9, Scheffler -8 (1)

I'm not entirely sure how Scottie Scheffler's birdie putt stayed out of the hole on the first, and although it's a par it's almost like a dropped shot given how easy the opener has been playing today.

The world number one takes it out on his ball on the second tee though, by absolutely hammering it down the fairway.

  18. 'Every step of the way - great support'published at 15:50 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

There are going to be huge galleries following McIlroy and Hovland, the Ryder Cup team-mates.

Hovland is right in contention really for the first time.

And there is an indicator of the kind of support that Rory McIlroy will be receiving today. Applause as it heads down the first fairway, as the breeze picks up.

Every step of the way they will be receiving great support - the crowds are two-three deep. Tiger and Rory sized crowds - so good luck anyone out there getting a view on what's happening out there.

  19. Back-to-back birdies for Fleetwoodpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    Fleetwood -8 (15)

    Yes Tommy!

Fleetwood rolls in a beautiful birdie putt at the 15th and moves to eight-under.

    A fine move from the 2019 runner-up.

  20. Postpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 16 July 2022

    McIlroy -10, Hovland -10

Rory McIlroy's arrival on the first tee is, as expected, met with acclaim and he swishes his opening tee shot down the impossibly wide fairway in front of him.

Viktor Hovland's in fine shape, too, so the penultimate pairing are off and running.
