  1. Birdies for DJ and Tommypublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Johnson -12, Fleetwood -11 (5)

Birdies for Dustin Johnson and Tommy Fleetwood at the par-five fifth keeps their momentum going.

DJ's just four back while Fleetwood is five adrift.

They're really bunching up behind McIlroy and Hovland!

  2. Pars for Hovland and McIlroypublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Hovland -16, McIlroy -16 (3)

Oh! Viktor Hovland expects a right-to-left swing and that's what he gets... but not in time for his ball to disappear down the drain.

    He's chuntering.

A big chance for Rory McIlroy to gain the upper hand on the leaderboard - and perhaps psychologically.

The putter has been hot all week, but it's still warming up today.

McIlroy drags it and we stay as we were.

What a moment for Filippo Celli!

The Italian's eagle putt on the last doesn't quite drop, but it's a birdie for a closing 71 and he will be back on the 18th green this evening to collect the Silver Medal for leading amateur.

He finishes six shots ahead of the Cayman Islands' Aaron Jarvis with English duo Barclay Brown and Sam Bairstow seven and nine back respectively.

Celli's father is overcome with emotion behind the green. Lovely scenes. What The Open's all about.

Celli follows in the footsteps of Matteo Manassero, who won it in 2009. Remember him?

  4. Eagle for storming Schauffelepublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Schauffele -11 (14)

It's basically a tap-in eagle for Zander Schauffele on the 14th, and it was only a couple of feet away from being an albatross two on the par five.

The Olympic champion is now 11 under as he moves to six under for the day - you suspect he's just too far back for it to count but he'll look to get at least a couple more and set a number in the clubhouse.

  5. 'Magnificent'published at 15:24 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Hovland -16 McIlroy -16 (2)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

Oh McIlroy has hit a magnificent shot. Glorious shot and he has hit it to four feet.

He played in true links style. Magic.

Stokes of the brush which Dali would be proud of.

These two really are playing some surreal stuff already.

First, Viktor Hovland deftly attacks the flag with his wedge and flies it up on the platform where the flag sits today.

McIlroy matches him... in fact, betters him with a slightly different approach of a lower runner.

    Birdie putts await...

  7. Postpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Fitzpatrick -10, Scott -11 (5)

A second birdie of the day for Adam Scott and he joins the bunch on 11 under, while Matt Fitzpatrick is just a shot further back on 10 under.

Rory McIlroy struck that pose for a long time after his drive, tickling his ribs in concern as it flew through the now humid St Andrews air. The midges are out to witness this tussle for the Claret Jug, too.

    Hovland -16, McIlroy -16 (2)

Rory McIlroy is knocking drives longer than country roads. He's had his fibre-packed cereal.

There is a grimace though from the Northern Irishman on the third tee, followed by a couple of noises which could be loosely described as 'ooohs'.

The sort of noise you'd make when jumping into a plunge pool.

He's alright, you know. Not too far off the green on the 398-yard par four.

  10. Young bounces backpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Smith -13, Young -12 (3)

Cam Smith's eyeing up another birdie three.

It's tracking...ohhh, he bends his knees as the ball creeps past the left edge. So close, but just a par.

And that's more like it from Cameron Young, who curls his left-to-righter into the heart to balance the books after his dropped shot at the first.

Not a slice of wafer-thin ham between them at the moment.

Still difficult to answer the only question we need to ask - who will win the 150th Open Championship?

Thumbs up for Viktor Hovland - thumbs down for Rory McIlroy.

  12. 'Looking for every ounce of information'published at 15:14 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Hovland -16, McIlroy -16 (2)

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 live

When you look at the hole from both sides before putting, you are just trying to make sure that you get every ounce of information on a putt like this.

You are looking to make that first blow.

  13. Pars for Hovland and McIlroypublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Hovland -16, McIlroy -16 (2)

Stand by folks, ears will pop if this goes south.

McIlroy for birdie... nice weight, just not quite the line.

Hovland follows suit... almost a carbon copy.

A game of follow the (co) leader at the moment.

  14. Spieth surgingpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Spieth -11 (5)

Just Jordan Spieth doing Jordan Spieth things out there at St Andrews today - with three birdies in his first five holes moving him to within five of the leaders.

It's not quite a genuine Claret Jug challenge just yet, but a couple more would make it interesting - especially with it being Spieth.

Arguably the most thrilling golfer to watch on the planet.

  15. Postpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Smith -13, Young -11 (2)

Cam Smith is walking after his approach into the third.

It's another corker and he'll have around 15 feet for his second birdie in a row. Is the Australian going to be the one to break out of the peloton?

    He's looking good so far.

Rory McIlroy’s wedged approach into the second took a nice slice of turf from the fairway with it - the sort of connection you’d find very satisfying when playing yourself - and his caddie quickly scuttled up to retrieve it. Good etiquette.

That face can never belong to a villain.

Hovland and McIlroy wander ahead of their balls, seeing how the land lies up there.

The Norwegian has 100 or so yards left and pulls the gap wedge out of the bag.

A ferocious swing sees him go past the flag. That's OK. A fly in the eye is not so pleasant.

Luckily his caddie doubles up as an optometrist.

McIlroy from closer in... same line and length. A bit of backspin helps him hold position and he also has a birdie putt from behind the hole.

“Come on, Viktor,” says a sole voice at the second tee. He’s normally one of the most popular men on tour, today - for many here - he’s Big Vik the Villain.

  20. Scheffler wasting chancespublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Scheffler -11, Kim -11 (3)

Scottie Scheffler's had three decent birdie looks on his opening three holes but he's made nothing so far.

We're not talking outside chances here either, we're talking big chances he'd expect to take, so he could and should really be applying some pressure right now.

    Big chances wasted.
