Summary

  • Winner: -20 Smith (64)

  • Selected: -19 Young (65); -18 McIlroy (70); -14 Hovland (74), Fleetwood (67)

  • -13 Johnson (69), Harman (66); -12 Spieth (68), DeChambeau (66), Cantlay (68)

  1. Young and Smith may fly under the radarpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Smith -12, Young -12 (14:40 BST)

The two Camerons combined for 144 yesterday. Simply put, both Young and Smith will need something in the mid-60s today to revive their hopes of nabbing the Claret Jug from McIlroy or Hovland.

Both players are also hoping to exorcise some major Sunday ghosts from earlier this year. Smith was closest to Scottie Scheffler after 54 holes at the Masters, but a closing 73 kept him out of the reckoning.

As for Young, the PGA Tour rookie was in contention at the PGA Championship up until the 70th hole, when he three-putted for a double bogey. He subsequently missed out on the play-off by a shot.

They'll need to be aggressive, they'll need to pick up early birdies to put the squeeze on Rory and Viktor, but with the spotlight set to be firmly fixed on the final pairing, the two Camerons may fancy their chances of going low while flying under the radar.

  2. Hatton on the move early onpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Hatton -10 (5)

Tyrrell Hatton's putting together an excellent front nine, following birdies on two and three with another gain at the par-five fifth.

He may be too far back, but Hatton will be at the very least looking to better his previous best Open finish (tied fifth in 2016).

  3. Fleetwood starts with birdiepublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Fleetwood -10, Johnson -10 (1)

A lovely start for England's Tommy Fleetwood, who picks up a birdie at the opening hole.

Dustin Johnson tries to match him but his putt stops just short of the hole.

Possibly the start of a low one from Tommy? Remember, he shot 63 in the final round of the 2018 US Open to finish second, so he knows how to do it!

  4. Can Scheffler apply the pressure?published at 14:32 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Scheffler -11, Kim -11

The world number one is underway, playing alongside Kim Si-woo who are both five shots off the leading duo.

I don't think anyone will catch Hovland and McIlroy, but if there is a danger then Scottie Scheffler could be it - he's well capable of going seriously low and applying some early pressure.

  7. The hangers-on you don't see at homepublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    Alex Bysouth
    BBC Sport at St Andrews

If you've been a spectator at an Open before, you've probably seen the scrum of people following the leading players around, the hangers-on that the TV cameras do a remarkable job of keeping out of shot for those watching at home.

That's been me this week, scrambling around trying to see what's going on while also not getting in the way of fans who have managed to jostle their way to the perimeter to see the action - you definitely don't want these ears obstructing your view, so there's been a lot of kneeling in gorse bushes and squatting behind dunes.

Reporters, photographers, social media crews and radio commentators are among those who follow the action from inside the ropes, although the sizeable entourage is supposed to stay within touching distance of the sideline when possible - never, ever get in a player's way, or accidentally find yourself in the TV frame.

On days like this, it's a pretty surreal spot to watch the events unfold.

    Hovland -16 (14:50 BST)

What time is it? Viktor Hovland checks his phone on the putting green. Still a bit to go yet, Vik.

After some practice with the short stick, knocking a couple of balls around the green, Hovland heads over to the chipping range.

Chipping is not the strongest part of his game, but it's not been severely tested at St Andrews so far.

  9. 'No-one's going to go out there and beat him'published at 14:26 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    McIlroy -16 (14:50 BST)

    Colin Montgomerie
Former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie on BBC Radio 5 live

More from former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie on Rory McIlroy's chances:

"I think it would help Viktor Hovland if he wasn't in that group but of course he is in that group because of the same score.

"No-one's going to go out there and beat him. I think the only way he loses this today is if he loses it, like Cam Smith at the 13th hole yesterday.

"Golfer and caddie today have to work together to get it right, work out the angles and be sensible. The caddie and the player have to be 100% on today.

"We hope that they can bring this home."

    Fitzpatrick -9, Scott -9 (1)

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

Matt Fitzpatrick might not be in the good books of those at St Andrews after his comments yesterday that he's not a huge fan of the course.

Fitzpatrick also doesn't seem to think the Old Course stands up to modern golf - in comments that suggest he won't be making a big challenge today.

Both Fitz and Adam Scott kick-off with a par and at seven shots back it would be a slice of history of they were to get their hands on the Claret Jug.

A fast start by one of the players going out now would give the leaders something to think about though.

Sunday is a great day for celeb spotting and selfies at the Open.

Here’s Ronan Keating - dad of Love Island's Jack, for you young'uns - joined by a couple of Boyzone fans out by the practice range.

"No matter what" happens this afternoon, they will always have that "picture of you in my mind", and now also on their iCloud. One to look back on "when the going gets tough".

    McIlroy -16 (14:50 BST)

Camera phones everywhere on the range. All pointing in the direction of Rory McIlroy.

Now this is one for the professionals, but the amateur psychoanalysts among us would say McIlroy looks a little tense and edgy.

Or is that just the game face?

Wonder what Dr Bob Rotella - the sports psychologist who McIlroy has been employing on a part-time basis over the past couple of years - is thinking.

Today - the final round of a major - is where the doc earns his money.

  16. A Rory stroll or a nervy shootout?published at 14:13 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

I was mooching round the course a little earlier this morning, checking out a potential long-lost relative as he played with Paul Casey.

My dad is big on checking out our family history, so in case my old man is reading - Jason Scrivener was born in South Africa in 1989 and moved to Perth, Australia when he was 10.

The world number 189 plies his trade on the DP World Tour and is playing in just his fourth major.

Anyway, I digress. While I was out there, I overheard one man remark "I really hope Rory and Hov bogey the first to bring others back into it."

Do you agree with that or do you want to see Rory pull five clear by the turn and stroll to victory on the way back in?

Thumbs up for the Rory stroll. Thumbs down for the five-man shootout...

    Interesting point from Monty there.

Didn't really have Hovland down as someone who might get intimidated by a playing partner, to be honest.

Anyone else agree that McIlroy's aura might help carry him home?

  18. Mellow in yellow?published at 14:08 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    McIlroy -16 (14:50 BST)

Looking relaxed, wearing a nice pale lemon shirt. Very zen and will be hoping the mellow yellow will reflect in his mood today.

  19. 'This is Rory's day'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 17 July 2022

    McIlroy -16 (14:50 BST)

    Colin Montgomerie
Former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie on BBC Radio 5 live

Former world number two Colin Montgomerie is putting his faith in Rory McIlroy today. Here is what the 2005 Open runner-up had to say on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"It is a duel but there's one winner. Rory's going to win this and I'll tell you why. I truly believe that Viktor Hovland thinks that Rory is better than him. Controversial it might be.

"Although he was ahead coming down the last few holes, you somehow felt that Rory was going to catch him, even with his bogey on 17. Somehow Viktor was hanging on with big putts at the start and putting extremely well.

"I don't think that's going to happen today. Viktor's a fantastic player, great guy. I think he'll finish second.

"I think this is Rory's day. I think the thing about Rory now, in a Tiger-esque way. I finished second to him in 2005. Did I think I would beat him in a round at St Andrews? Deep down? If I was honest with you, I'd say no.

"Did Els, did Vijay Singh, did David Duval in their day think they could beat Tiger when he wore that red shirt on Sundays? If they were honest with themselves they'd say possibly not, and I think that's what's going to happen today.

"It's been eight years of close finishes in majors, leading and then not getting it done, I think he believes and everyone else believes he is the best player out there."

He's got four birdies and an eagle and needs two more birdies to tie Sam Burns for the round of the day (64).
