Matthew Fitzpatrick will play alongside Mito Pereira in the final pairing on Sunday as an inexperienced group of players fight it out for their first major.

A lot of them haven't even won on the PGA Tour yet, with Will Zalatoris and Cameron Young in the chasing pack and also waiting for a first win.

Fitzpatrick is a seven-time winner on the DP World Tour though so knows how to get the job done, but winning a major is a different story.

The man from Sheffield shot a great round of 67 today, with Pereira sinking a big putt on the last for a 69.

Zalatoris battled well but struggled on the green, while Abraham Ancer and Seamus Power are also lurking after making moves.

Mito Pereira is only in his second major, but he told Sky Sports that he's going to enjoy playing in the final pairing on Sunday.

“In my second major, the first major I made the cut, I'm in the final pairing so of course I'm going to feel nervous but I just had to work with it," Pereira told Sky Sports about his round today.

And about his plan for tomorrow: “I’m just going to try keep my head in the moment.

"Try to enjoy it too as I’m in the final pairing of a major – if you would have told me this two or three years ago it’d be unreal, so I’m just going to try and do my best."

  6. Pereira on turning his day aroundpublished at 00:47 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Pereira -9 (67)

Mito Pereira talking to Sky Sports about his up-and-down round on Saturday: “I was playing well for the first seven or even eight holes.

"But then, I don’t know, sometimes you just close your eyes and when you open them again you have four bogeys in five holes!

“I guess this is a major.

“I was in a tough position over there on 13 but that birdie putt really helped and changed it a little bit.

"Just to get a little bit of momentum and get rid of the bogeys – it just gives you a little boost to get going again."

  9. Pereira leads by threepublished at 00:36 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

It was a tough day for everyone out on the course today, but at times Mito Pereira made it look so easy.

He also found it tough though and showed great maturity and character to rebound from carding four bogeys in five holes around the turn.

The response was emphatic, with back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14, before that tremendous putt on 18 gave him a three-shot lead heading into Sunday.

  11. 'This is my first time ever of being in proper contention'published at 00:27 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Fitzpatrick -6 (67)

    Fitzpatrick (left)Image source, Getty Images

Matt Fitzpatrick speaking to Sky Sports: "I hit it [holing out from the sand on the fifth] on a really good line in the air but I could not see any of it from down there and I just saw it drop in and obviously I was delighted.

"People think I am miserable. It is something I have been trying to be better at and having Billy [Foster] on my bag has been a big positive, so it's trying to not let shots bother me and I feel like this week I have done a really good job at it particularly today and I am proud of myself.

"I am looking forward to tomorrow whatever happens I have played well for three rounds at least.

"I have had the experience of being in the lead before in Europe. Obviously a major is completely different and I'll be honest this is my first time ever of being in proper contention in a major so I am just looking forward to tomorrow and I just feel like I go out and do what I have been doing all week.

"I have a big thank you to my club manufacturer. My four iron was worn out so I changed the model of it just before the round and I hit so many shots great with it today. I was trying to get in with the score I got and it [a birdie on 18] was an added bonus. I was playing for par but to pick it up is a bonus."

  12. Birdie finish for Pereira!published at 00:22 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Zalatoris -6 (73), Pereira -9 (69)

    Mito PereiraImage source, Getty Images

Well, well, well, what a finish from Mito Pereira as he sinks a 27-footer on the final green to make a closing birdie and just put a different complexion on things.

Zalatoris almost made his long birdie putt too, but a par seemed to be no damage done, until Pereira stepped up and drained his from downtown to extend his lead to three.

Pereira started his round brilliantly, then had a huge wobble, but finished strongly and he played like a seasoned campaigner at this level.

    In just his second major....

  13. Thomas & Watson falter at finishpublished at 00:18 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Thomas -2 (74), Watson -2 (73)

Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson just haven't been on it today and end their rounds with a whimper.

Watson, three putts after missing a five footer for par, while JT's trip into the bunker with his second ends up costing him a stroke.

  14. Postpublished at 00:15 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Zalatoris -6, Pereira -8 (17)

Zalatoris is just feeling it a bit now, he'd probably like another couple of holes, but this is the last and he's at least got a chance of birdie after finding the dancefloor with his second.

That would've looked great in the air as it was bang on line - just falling a bit short.

Pereira is also on the short stuff but also a long way away - it takes two seriously grown-up golf shots to get back to this flag on 18.

  15. Postpublished at 00:10 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Thomas -3, Watson -3 (17)

Justin Thomas pulls his tee shot left on the 18th into the thicker cut. Now what can he do from there?

He tries to plot a course to the green with one of his longer irons but sees his ball scud into the left bunker. Surely only a par at best from there?

Meanwhile, Bubba Watson hits a low cutter and skids it on to the dancefloor in two albeit with a 60-foot putt coming up the slope.

  16. Birdie for Zalatorispublished at 00:06 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Zalatoris -6, Pereira -8 (17)

Chalk one up for the adventurous golfer! Zalatoris plays a truly wonderful chip shot from the right rough, and then converts the putt to make birdie.

Safety-first Pereira plays an ordinary wedge and then hits a nice putt from 27 feet that burns the edge. Par for him and a two-shot lead still.

  17. Poor finish for Rorypublished at 00:05 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    McIlroy E (74), Ancer -4 (70)

Rory McIlroy from 195 yards on the last. It's uphill and there's a bit of a helping breeze but that's just a seven-iron for the Northern Irishman.

Pushed it a touch, stays on the green but 50 feet from the hole.

The birdie putt is never on line, staying right and racing six, seven, eight feet by.

Abraham Ancer, from the middle of the green, hits a lovely lag putt up to kick-in range to finish the day where he started it.

Rors to finish up... he's up and out and walking after that almost before he's hit it. A fifth stroke on the 18th needed and that's a four-over round.

  18. Thomas claws a shot backpublished at 00:01 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Thomas -3, Watson -3 (17)

Justin Thomas has got that spark back as he walks off the 17th with a birdie on his card. It's only his second of the day and it is very timely indeed.

Meanwhile, Bubba Watson's challenge looks to have fallen flat as he misses another short putt, this time for birdie.

  19. Postpublished at 00:00 British Summer Time 22 May 2022

    Zalatoris -5, Pereira -8 (16)

Pereira is in defensive mode now, as he turns down the chance to have a cut at the green on 17, which is a short par four today.

Zalatoris does have a go, but he guns it straight and the ball settles up against a tricky collar of rough at the bottom of the left-hand run-off area.

The one plus point is that he's got plenty of green to work with.

  20. Fitzpatrick fires himself into contentionpublished at 23:57 British Summer Time 21 May 2022

    Fitzpatrick -6 (67)

Well then what about this...Matt Fitzpatrick nails his approach to the 18th. A birdie putt from 14 feet and a chance to go six under coming up. In it pops.

He's going to be right in the mix on Sunday. Could he be in the final pairing? He is at the moment, sat in second place.
