    Right that's us done.

What a superb Sunday for the new US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

The Englishman held off the world's best players to claim his first major title with a one-shot victory at Brookline Country Club.

In the process he became just the fourth Englishman in the past 100 years to win the tournament. Alongside golfing great Jack Nicklaus Fitzpatrick is also one of only two men to have won the US Amateur title and the US Open at the same venue.

The 27-year-old is also the first non-American to win both titles.

Anyway, you can read all about that in our report.

See you all for the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews in July.

How good was Matt Fitzpatrick coming down the stretch?

The 27-year-old from Sheffield, was in a tie for fifth last month at the PGA Championship in his best prior major result.

Here he sank a stunning 48-foot birdie putt at the 13th hole to grab a share of the lead.

At the 15th, he blasted out of the right rough to just inside 19 feet and rolled in a tension-packed putt to reach six-under and lead by two thanks to a Will Zalatoris bogey.

And then that bunker shot on 18! Just wow.

More from Matt Fitzpatrick's caddie Billy Foster: "It means a lot. Westy, Darren and Seve all had their chances and Thomas Bjorn at Sandwich (2003 Open) really hurt.

"I thought about it every day for six months. It broke my heart. But this has put a lot of bad memories to bed.

"I always thought he (Fitzpatrick) was good enough to win a major. This week he has played unbelievably and not putted his best, which says it all."

  8. 'I've felt sick since this morning'published at 00:21 British Summer Time 20 June 2022

Matt Fitzpatrick's family have been speaking on Sky Sports, with mum Sue saying: "I've felt sick since this morning. It's a great result. I did start to relax a bit on 18. It's just amazing. We're so fortunate."

His brother Alex had flown home yesterday but said: "I flew home mid afternoon yesterday and when I landed he was tied for the lead so I flew back this morning.

"It was a hectic 24 hours but it was definitely worth the $150 coming back. I couldn't be prouder of him.

"If you look at 99% of the field here I would say not one of them would go through the things he does to get better. That separates him from everyone else."

And, when asked if they'd have a party house tonight, dad Russell was definitive: "Yes. It was lively last night!"

More from US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick: "I don't know if Jack (Nicklaus) is listening to this but he gave me some abuse at the start of the year, when I won a member-member competition at his club and he said congratulations on finally winning in the United States.

"I can go back to him now and say I've won twice.

"It's what you grow up dreaming of winning and I've worked so hard for such a long time.

"I had the big monkey on my back of not winning over here, it's all everybody talked about and to do it in a major, there's nothing better."

  10. 'I've loved every minute of it'published at 00:14 British Summer Time 20 June 2022

This week, Fitzpatrick has been staying with the same family who hosted him when he won the amateur tournament at Brookline in 2013.

"It's meant the world," he said

"I've obviously won here twice now. I'm trying to get every tour event round here. To stay with them this week has made it so much more relaxing. There's no pressure and I've loved every minute of it."

  11. 'I did not want a fairway bunker shot'published at 00:12 British Summer Time 20 June 2022

More from US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick on his bunker shot on the 18th: "Me and [caddie] Billy [Foster} spent quite a while talking about the 18th tee shot undecided.

"I hit the three wood into the bunker. If there's one shot I just did not want this year it's a fairway bunker shot.

"When I saw it leave the sand I couldn't be happier."

After accepting the US Open trophy, Matt Fitzpatrick says there are "no words" to describe how he is feeling.

"It's what you grow up dreaming of," he continues.

"It's something I've worked so hard for for such a long time. I've got to give myself credit: I had so much patience today.

"I said to [caddie] Billy [Foster], if I can hit 18 greens today I'd like to think I've got a good chance. I nearly did it. I just played so solid all day."

It will embolden him. It will reaffirm what he's always known: that he's a world-class talent.

He should be able to really kick on but he's perfectly entitled to enjoy this for a while. What a reception he'll get at St Andrews.

Nice touch from Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman's wait for a fifth major may go on but he hung around to support Matt Fitzpatrick at the death.

McIlroy has also now finished in the top 10 of the US Open for the fourth consecutive time himself.

Matt Fitzpatrick's caddie Billy Foster told Sky Sports: "He played absolutely brilliant - did my head in missing a few short putts.

"He didn't need to win by four. One was enough. It means everything to me. I always thought he was good enough to win a major.

"This week he's played incredible golf."
