  1. Another birdie for Matsuyamapublished at 21:50 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Matsuyama -3 (16)

Hideki Matsuyama is having an incredible day.

He's now five under for the day and three under overall after a birdie on the 16th.

That's his third birdie in five holes. A bit late to take the win perhaps but it will be interesting to see how high he can get up the leaderboard before he heads in.

  2. Zalatoris closes inpublished at 21:41 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Fitzpatrick -6, Zalatoris -5 (9)

Will Zalatoris is on the move...he likes his putt and strides up to collect it from the cup after watching it veer from left to right before disappearing.

Matt Fitzpatrick sinks to his knees as his putt from right to left just doesn't turn in enough.

The US Open leader was expecting that to drop.

    Fitzpatrick -6, Zalatoris -4 (8)

That is some shot from Will Zalatoris.

The American carelessly goes right into the rough off the tee but nips his second over the rim of the left bunker and sees it spring on another few yards to manufacture a birdie chance.

Matt Fitzpatrick takes maybe a seven or eight iron, spiralling in his second to 14 feet.

  5. Bogey for Schefflerpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Scheffler -5 (10)

Going long on the 10th really isn't an option, but Scheffler makes that mistake and he's left with a bunker shot that's rapid down the hill - with his putter this time unable to bail him out.

It's a bogey that drops him to five under and leaves Matt Fitzpatrick as the new solo leader of the US Open.

  6. Bogey for McIlroypublished at 21:37 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    McIlroy E, Burns E (11)

That's got to be the end of Rory McIlroy's US Open challenge this year right?

After his tee shot found its way off the 11th green, his first putt comes up 8ft short and the second drifts left. Another shot gone and he's back level.

His opening birdie was such a promising start...

  7. Birdie for Fitzpatrickpublished at 21:31 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Fitzpatrick -6, Zalatoris -4 (8)

Will Zalatoris is now playing like the bloke with five top-10 finishes in his eight prior major starts.

He was a runner-up last month at the PGA Championship, losing a playoff to Justin Thomas, and second in last year's Masters. Could he do the business this time around?

He's got a 20 footer for birdie on the eighth but can't drop that one in.

Matt Fitzpatrick up now from 25 feet, but for eagle. Sensibly played, the world number 18 rolls up to a foot and then taps in a birdie to move back to six under and grab a share of the lead.

    McIlroy -1, Burns E (10)

Rory McIlroy has snuck off the back of the green at the par-three 11th.

He might still have a late surge, but the win is surely out of the question now with how Scheffler and Fitzpatrick are playing.

  9. Destined for a play-off?published at 21:27 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

The history of this place says we're going to end in a play-off because the previous three US Open held here have done so, right back to the first one in 1913 when Francis Ouimet surprised British favourites Harry Vardon and Ted Ray

  10. Par for McIlroypublished at 21:25 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    McIlroy -1, Burns E (10)

Rory McIlroy gets ever so slightly overexcited with his birdie attempt on the 10th.

It's a 14ft putt and he needs to curl it round from right to left. McIlroy just about has the right line but there's too much on it and it curls around the back of the hole.

It's another par. Remember the heady days of all those birdies and bogeys?

  11. Rahm drops backpublished at 21:24 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Bradley -1, Rahm -1 (8)

Jon Rahm has barely threatened to make a birdie and now drops another shot. A wild tee shot contributed massively to that with the Spaniard struggling to get out of the rough, with his second landing shy of the dancefloor.

Keegan Bradley is on the birdie train mind, zinging his second into five feet as he taps in for consecutive birdies.

  12. Scheffler turns in 31published at 21:22 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Scheffler -6 (9)

Nine holes down and Scottie Scheffler turns for home leading the US Open by a shot after a tidy par on the ninth.

His second shot is a towering iron that lands about pin high to the right, and although his birdie putt never has a chance of dropping in, it's a tap-in par.

Still a long way to go, but Scheffler's the man to beat.

I remember my dad taking 18 on the 17th hole of the Old Course at St Andrews. He found every possible bit of trouble and then some.

  14. Postpublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    McIlroy -1, Burns E (9)

Rory McIlroy nailed his drive down the middle of the 10th fairway.

He briefly gives his second shot evils as he wonders whether it's going to start rolling its way down the green.

It behaves itself and there's a chance at birdie here. A challenging chance, but a chance nevertheless.

  15. Successive birdies for Zalatorispublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Fitzpatrick -5, Zalatoris -4 (7)

Will Zalatoris stiffs his approach into the seventh...the crowd up on the green are going wild as the American's ball skips up towards the pin and almost grazes the cup before stopping eight inches past.

A gimme birdie. The world number 14 may have started slowly but he is firing on all cylinders now.

Matt Fitzpatrick doesn't like his iron shot which is drifting right. He'll be putting from downtown.

He takes aim well right and sends his ball up the slight ramp seeing it turn left back towards the cup. He should make par from there.

  16. Par for McIlroypublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    McIlroy -1, Burns E (9)

No such fun for Rory McIlroy, who once again comes close with a birdie putt.

Coming close won't be enough with the way they're playing at the top of the leaderboard.

It's just a par and McIlroy is level for the day at the turn.

  17. Back-to-back birdies for Matsuyamapublished at 21:10 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Matsuyama -2 (13)

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama is having some day.

He's just holed a 39ft putt for a birdie on the 13th after a birdie on the 12th too.

That puts Matsuyama on four under for the day and two under overall.

  18. Par savepublished at 21:08 British Summer Time 19 June 2022

    Scheffler -6 (8)

And save par he does! It's not the hardest or longest putt he's had today, but it gets the biggest fist pump Scheffler's displayed so far as he knows that bogeys around Brookline often come in bunches.

    Bradley E, Rahm -2 (7)

Jon Rahm could become only the second non-US player to win consecutive US Opens after Scotsman Willie Anderson took three from 1903-1905.

But for that to happen he will need to switch on his radar. From being perfectly placed off the tee the Spaniard pushes his second well right to leave an improbable birdie chance from a good 40 feet.

Keegan Bradley shows him how it is done landing his eight feet past the pin before making his first birdie of the day.
