Rory McIlroy says he is "one great round of golf away" from winning a fifth major title as he starts the final day three shots off the lead.

A battling three-over-par 73 in round three took him to one under for the tournament.

The world number three struggled on Saturday with three bogeys in his first six holes but superb putting on the back nine saw him remain in the hunt.

"I just needed to grind it out," he said of his third round.

"To play that back nine at even par was a really good effort. Just kept myself in the tournament."

The Northern Irishman has fought hard all week to keep himself in contention - bouncing back from a double bogey on the third in round two.

He won in Canada last week, and as we saw yesterday, three shots is noting to make up.

McIlroy is playing with Sam Burns who definitely cannot be discounted. The American has won three times on the PGA Tour this season to jump up to ninth in the world rankings.

The 25-year-old has won almost half of his $14m career earnings this season and is second in the FedEx Cup standings.

Matt Fitzpatrick has the chance to make history today by becoming the second player after Jack Nicklaus to win both the US Amateur and US Open on the same course.

The 27-year-old would be the 13th player to win both tournaments and the first non-American. The Englishman enters Sunday’s final round tied for first at four under with American Will Zalatoris.

Bryson DeChambeau was the last player to win both titles in 2020, the other 10 include Francis Ouimet, Jerome Travers, Chick Evans, Bobby Jones, Johnny Goodman, Lawson Little, Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Jerry Pate and Tiger Woods.

    What a list!

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the final round of the 122nd US Open.

I nearly wrote PGA Championship there for a minute, very much a feeling of deja vu with England's Matt Fitzpatrick out last again on his hunt for his first major, accompanied by the runner-up from Southern Hills, American Will Zalatoris.

Defending champion Jon Rahm is a shot behind after he double bogeyed the 18th, with world number one Scottie Scheffler on two under after a wild 71.

Rory McIlroy battled to a 73 and sits three shots behind on one under.

    Talk about a stacked leaderboard.
