  1. Fitz bogeyspublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick +2, Rahm -1, Smith -1 (5*)

I'm wondering if Matt Fitzpatrick is now thinking a little four-iron nudged down the fairway might have been the smart play on 14.

He has to take a penalty drop after his wayward tee shot and then misses the green with his third, plunging into the rough at the front. A super chip up from there though leaves him a tap-in bogey.

Jon Rahm flicks his second from the bunker to eight feet but misses the curler back down the hill. Par.

Cam Smith also plays a delicate one out of the rough to three feet. Big birdie chance. Pushed it. His ball grabs the right edge and swings out left. Par.

  2. Three birdies on spin for Hovlandpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland -1, Lowry +1, Spieth E (6*)

    Viktor HovlandImage source, Getty Images

Viktor Hovland has hit a vein of form as rich as his footballing compatriot Erling Haaland.

Three successive birdies as he rolls in from five feet after a superb drive on the par-three 15th.

  3. Fine front nine for Foxpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fox -2 (9)

    Ryan FixImage source, Getty Images

New Zealander Ryan Fox picks up a birdie on the ninth to move to two under for his round. It's a nice approach to 11 feet that sets up the chance, which he sinks nicely.

It's been an eventful time recently for Fox, who had been suffering from pneumonia and also returned to Auckland to welcome his second child. He looks to be back in the swing of things now though.

  4. Postpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler -1, Koepka E, Woodland +2 (7*)

Picture perfect drives from Scheffler and Koepka leave them within short distance of the challenging 17th.

No one has birdied this hole yet today but Scheffler will have a tidy look as he pings his approach to within 16 feet.

Koepka is a tad shorter with his second and cannot creep onto the green but should still have a look at a birdie.

  5. Fitz in deep troublepublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick +1, Rahm -1, Smith -1 (4*)

It seems like an age since this trio of major champions left the 13th green and ambled over to the 14th tee. There appears to be a bit of a log-jam developing on this hole, which is playing 317 yards and tempting players to drive the green.

The issue appears to be that the green is near impossible to hit! The fairway finishes 30 yards short of the green and there is deep rough and three bunkers protecting the putting surface, which is on a plateau.

Still, that doesn't stop Jon Rahm having a swipe at it. Bunker. Cam Smith? Rough. Matt Fitzpatrick? Tugged way way left. So far left it's almost in Canada. That could be out of bounds.

  6. Hovland happy, Lowry less sopublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland E, Lowry +1, Spieth E (5*)

Always an advantage to putt second and Viktor Hovland watches Jordan Spieth roll one just wide from 15 feet on the 14th and learns from the American's miss.

Nicely in the heart of the hole from the Norwegian who bogeyed two of his first three holes but has bounced back well.

He's back at level par, swapping scores with irate Irishman Shane Lowry, who is still castigating himself for a poor bunker shot and average follow-up that results in his first bogey of the round.

  7. Postpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler -1, Koepka E, Woodland +2 (7*)

    Brooks KoepkaImage source, Getty Images

Nice from Koepka. These bunkers are steep and he squirts his third shot out to leave four feet for par. It's a solid putt to stay level.

Scheffler's eye is in too and he gets within two feet with his third.

Another steady par for the 2022 Masters champion.

  8. McIlroy and Morikawa drop shotspublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy +1, Morikawa -1, Thomas -1 (6)*

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

Rory McIlroy plays a lovely wedge shot to get inside 10 feet but this putt isn't easy and he slides it just right to drop his first shot of the round.

Collin Morikawa, hands a shot back after making consecutive birdies. The American went 18 feet past after whipping his tee shot into the bunker and just left himself too much to do there.

    McIlroy E, Morikawa -2, Thomas -1 (5)*

Oops. It's Collin Morikawa's honour on the 15th but he finds the deep left bunker that runs the length of the dancefloor with no more than an eight or nine iron.

Rory McIlroy is in a spot of bother after finding the sand at the front of the putting surface and Justin Thomas has a lengthy birdie chance incoming after landing his around 30 feet from the pin.

That's not going to drop for JT, but his attempt brings out a few oohs and aahs from the greenside fans as it pulls up at gimme range.

  11. Shocker for Shanepublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth E (4*)

    Shane LowryImage source, Getty Images

Shane Lowry was also in the bunker - the three players' balls were separated by a matter of inches, not often you see that. Three virtually identical tee shots.

Having seen Spieth and Hovland land their pitches short, Lowry does the opposite and overhits it massively, as it drops off the other side of the green.

The Irishman audibly turns the air blue. He is furious with himself.

  12. Postpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler -1, Koepka E, Woodland +2 (6*)

Koepka and Scheffler both in the rough off the tee for the par-four 16th.

Brooks goes first and dunks his approach shot into the front-right greenside bunker. More magical sand play needed for the two-time champion.

Scheffler has a look and sticks it to the edge of the green. He's neatly placed on the fairway - a decent result from the thick stuff.

  13. Higa hits the turnpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Higa -3 (9*)

Kazuki Higa is handling this situation pretty nicely so far, and he pars his ninth safely enough to turn in 32, three under, to sit at the top of the leaderboard.

  14. An Englishman leadspublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Tarren -3 (4)

    Callum TarrenImage source, Getty Images

Some early English success as Callum Tarren started his round with a steady par, and backed that up nicely with three successive birdies.

Not a bad way to start your debut at the US PGA Championship.

No Englishman has won this tournament since Jim Barnes in 1919. Early days.

  15. Postpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth E (4*)

    Jordan SpiethImage source, Getty Images

Jordan Spieth has taken an absolute eternity to measure up his bunker shot - maybe too long judging by the result.

He had plenty of green to work with but comes up well short of the pin by about 15 feet.

Viktor Hovland drove his tee shot to within inches of Spieth's in the same bunker. Can he do better than the American's second shot? Yep, but only just. Two testing putts to come.

  16. Morikawa on the movepublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy E, Morikawa -2, Thomas -1 (5)*

Rory McIlroy prods his putt up the slope but it stays left and it'll be a fifth straight par.

Justin Thomas is going to take a four as well after being faced with a horrible looking shot out of the sand.

Collin Morikawa rolls in for back-to back birdies. He'll be extremely happy with that.

  17. Fitz droppingpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick +1, Rahm -1, Smith -1 (4*)

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

Cam Smith is watching Jon Rahm's birdie putt closely. Their lines are similar.

Rahm can't set his ball out far enough to the right though and he misses on the low side. What has Smith learned? Precisely nothing. Pars.

It's a dropped shot for Matt Fitzpatrick though. His chip from 40 yards is distinctly average and he speeds his 27-foot par attempt three past.

  18. Postpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth E (4*)

An in-form Jordan Spieth is always a pleasure to watch and the American is showing no signs of the wrist injury that threatened his participation in New York this week.

Tries to drive the green on the 320-yard par-four 14th and just falls short into a bunker but the lie looks favourable for a pitch and birdie opportunity.

  19. Birdies for Connerspublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Conners -1 (6)

Canadian Corey Conners is a name that's often up and around the top of the major leaderboards without serious troubling the leaders.

He's got three top 10 finishes at the Masters but not too much joy anywhere else - and he's failed to finish under par in four previous PGA Championship appearances.

He's started well enough here though with a couple of birdies cancelling out an early bogey to dip into red figures.

  20. Postpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler -1, Koepka E, Woodland +2 (6*)

Not to be for Koepka whose birdie putt sneaks past the hole and he has to settle for a three.

It's the same story for Scheffler who runs on by before tidying up from three feet to claim par.
