Delightful from Collin Morikawa, who opens his club face and splashes out onto the putting surface to six feet.

Rory McIlroy is up next, and that's not bad from that lie. Is this going to run on a touch? No.

A little bit of a guess but I'd say that's somewhere around the 12 feet mark, with a slight uphill putt to come.

    Fitzpatrick E Smith -1, Rahm -1 (3*)

Cameron Smith laid up with his second shot on the long 13th, leaving himself 123 yards in with his third. His wedge goes straight over the top of the flag and uses a slope 25 feet past to help drag his ball back into 15 feet.

Jon Rahm is gouging his third out of the deepest of rough, and he gets a bit too much of that but his ball catches the slope and gets a little better with each roll. He's still got 20 feet left though.

England's finest Matt Fitzpatrick has had two trips to the rough and as a consequence is still 40 yards short of the green after three blows.

    Scheffler -1, Koepka E, Woodland +2 (5*)

I said it was all about precision and Koepka's nailed it, floating his tee shot to 10 feet from the flag.

Scheffler has also gone for it and he's on the green but with a much trickier (and longer) putt facing him from the back of the putting surface.

An inviting chance for Koepka to get into the red.

    McIlroy E, Morikawa -1, Thomas -1 (4)*

The 14th hole is a tempter with players having the option to drive the green with this par four coming in at 317 yards.

The biggest issue is avoiding the three bunkers at the front of the putting surface and neither Collin Morikawa or Justin Thomas manage that plopping into the sand on the left front.

Rory McIlroy stays out of the yellow stuff but instead comes up short down the right side, with some 30 yards and a bunker to skip over to reach the flag. He's in the gnarly stuff here. It'll take some shot to go close.

    Scheffler -1, Koepka E, Woodland +2 (5*)

The par-three 15 has seen some changes since we were last here for the US PGA Championship a decade ago.

Where the pond to the left is now just a steep slope while two sides of the raised green are flanked by deep bunkers.

Precision will be key for Scheffler and co.

  6. Scheffler picks up first birdiepublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler -1, Koepka E, Woodland +2 (5*)

    Scheffler's up and running.

Confident firm putt from the Texan and he snaffles his first birdie of the day at 14.

Koepka is also moving in the right direction as he capitalises on that excellent chip to claw his shot back.

Woodland is going backwards though. Three putts and he's got his second bogey of the opening five holes.

  7. Postpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Rahm -1 (3*)

Jon Rahm has pummeled his drive 305 yards down the par-five 13th and has just the 312 yards left...

The Spaniard is out with a three-wood from the first cut of rough, fading one further down the right. He's short of the green and in the rough but it's the right side to miss on, leaving himself a good angle in.

  8. Spieth back on even keelpublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth E (4*)

Mad to think it's six years since Jordan Spieth's last major win, at the 2017 Open - there was a period where he looked like he could dominate the game.

He's back to level par after a wonderful bunker shot on 13 - it's a steep escape but Spieth makes light of it to roll the ball within a foot of the hole. Tap-in city for a birdie.

Viktor Hovland makes up the shot he dropped on the previous hole with a birdie too.

  9. Postpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler E, Koepka +1, Woodland +1 (4*)

We've seen some nice wedge work from Brooks Koepka already today and he will surely be retrieving his dropped shot in a couple of minutes after producing a delicious chip from the front-right bunker to leave within two feet for birdie.

Scheffler has a harder task from his position deep in the rough out left. He can see a lot of the tabletop green and clips it out but the ball does not swing as he wants.

He'll need to putt from 14 feet to claim his first birdie of the day.

  10. Captain Americapublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Z Johnson -1 (5)

American Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson said before this that he'd love to play well enough to qualify for his own team - then drop himself!

And the two-time major champion can still swing it, as he's one under after five holes and coping nicely with the test. He's not the biggest hitter but the fairways are firm and you can get full value out of some low runners off the tee.

    Higa -3 (8*)

    Kazuki HigaImage source, Getty Images

Oh dear, Higa drops a shot as Oak Hill shows its teeth, as he finds the left rough off the tee and can only advance 90 yards with his second, to leave himself 117 yards in.

To be fair he gives himself an outside chance at saving par by leaving a 25-footer from his approach, but it doesn't drop as a shot goes.

  12. Bogey bother for Hovlandpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +2, Lowry E, Spieth +1 (3*)

    Viktor HovlandImage source, Getty Images

Not a great start for Norway's Viktor Hovland, who has bogeyed two of his opening three holes.

Solid beginning from Ireland's Shane Lowry, though, with a third par on the bounce.

  13. Morikawa goes into the red numberspublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy E, Morikawa -1, Thomas -1 (4)*

Rory McIlroy has a 140-yard approach and zips that in to just inside 20 feet. A tough birdie chance incoming for the Northern Irishman, who last won this title in 2014.

That's not going to drop. Solid stuff from McIlroy, who cards another par.

A raking iron shot sees Justin Thomas in to 10 feet but his return putt almost tickles the edge of the cup and stays up. Tap-in par.

Collin Morikawa looks to have a nailed on birdie here after clipping a gorgeous looking wedge shot to five feet. And in it drops.

  14. Birdie for Open championpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick E, Rahm -1, Smith -1 (3*)

    Cameron SmithImage source, Get

Cameron Smith gives his putt a fair old rattle up the hill on the 12th. Boom! In she drops. If that had been an inch either side of the hole he'd have been eyeing a six-footer back.

Can Matt Fitzpatrick follow him in from five feet closer? The speed is good, the line looks great... no... a fraction left.

Jon Rahm from 18 feet for a second birdie... burns the right edge but stays on the green.

  15. Postpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler E, Koepka+1, Woodland +1 (4*)

Scheffler goes for the green on the short par-four 14th but he's pulled it and the ball ends up in the rough to the back left. Could be a testing chip for the world number two.

Koepka follows him at the flag and his tee shot leaks slight right, bouncing into the front right greenside bunker. That lie ought to be OK to get up and down from there.

  16. Postpublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick E, Rahm -1, Smith E (2*)

The pin on the par-four 12th is perilously close to the back of the green. So close that not many are taking it on today.

Jon Rahm fancies it though from around 100 yards out. His ball is right on line again, but lands 15 feet short and puts on the brakes before hitting reverse.

Matt FItzpatrick is chasing one up out of the thick rough but his ball also grabs on the green and trundles backwards down a slope.

In the ideal spot is Cam Smith. Just a flick from 90 yards, but he too misjudges the distance and his ball has the most spin on it, racing away from the flag, perhaps 40 feet.

  17. Postpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy E, Morikawa E, Thomas -1 (3)*

On to one of Oak Hill's signature holes now for Rory McIlroy and company.

The par-five13th is playing at 617 yards today having been lengthened been lengthened a couple of times over the years, most recently by around 30 yards.

McIlroy booms that down the left but finds the thicker cut. He won't be happy with that.

Justin Thomas, who lands plum in the middle of the fairway and Collin Morikawa, who drifts off right will have almost no chance at all of reaching the dance floor with their second shots as well.

    Inglis -1 (7*)

Colin Inglis briefly made an appearance near the top of the leaderboard with back-to-back birdies.

The 34-year-old is one of the PGA pros taking part at Oak Hill - he's an Assistant Professional in fact, as Shadow Hills Country Club appearing in his second PGA Championship.

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick said on Wednesday that he was looking forward to tackling this "brute of a golf course" at Oak Hill.

The East Course has undergone many changes since it last hosted this tournament in 2013 and is now a 7,394-yard, par-70 track which features two par fives of more than 600 yards.

"There are so many tough holes, it's a proper test," said the Englishman.

"I like it when it's hard and you've got to battle and par is a good score."

The world number seven arrives at this championship in good form having won the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage title last month.

He added: "It reminds me a lot of Winged Foot when we played [the 2020 US Open] because when you missed the fairways there, it was just chipping out.

"I've said it multiple times, I hate it when tournaments are 25, 30 under par to win.

"I don't particularly feel like I play well in those."

A steady start for Fitzy today - a couple of excellent par saves hopefully setting the tone for a good putting week.

No joy for Scheffler whose putt rolls left.

Koepka sizes up his chance to claw back the shot he dropped on 12 but just pushes it past and will have to settle for par.

    As you were.
