    Scheffler E, Koepka +1, Woodland +1 (3*)

Oh that's a nice bounce, Brooks.

Koepka's third shot cannons off the hill to the left of the green, bounces back onto the putting surface and rolls round for a seven-foot birdie chance to get him back to level par.

Woodland follows him in and he'll also have a look at birdie from 18 feet.

Scheffler booms his second shot down the fairway and chips from 25 yards to get within 10 feet of the pin.

  2. Pars all roundpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick E, Rahm -1, Smith E (2*)

Cam Smith, up against the face of the bunker on the 11th, his mullet resting neatly in the hood of his top, smashes his ball out of the sand. It pops up high and lands a dozen feet past the pin before spinning back a couple. Beautiful.

Jon Rahm is half a cricket pitch short of the green, a little ridge to chip over. He judges that to perfection, skipping it up to blow-in range. Delicate.

The only one with a putter in hand for his second shot is Matt Fitzpatrick but he's a little giddy with that 35-footer, racing it five past. Careless.

Smith first with the par putt, trickled in. Fitzpatrick is on the same line and learns.

  3. Postpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy E, Morikawa E, Thomas -1 (3)*

Rory McIlroy has been left with a tricky 41-foot putt for birdie up the slope but superbly rolls in to around a foot.

That's another par for the Northern Irishman who hasn't quite put it all together yet.

JT and Collin Morikawa also collect pars, with Morikawa doing well to roll into within four feet from some 80 feet away.

  4. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth +1 (2*)

Ah, Jordan Spieth lofts one over the avenues of rough onto the par-four 12th green to within about 10 feet of the flag.

Well, it was within 10 feet but it spins back, finds the slope and now it's probably closer to 40 feet. Agonising.

You don't get too many chances around Oak Hill, and when you hit a drive like McIlroy just did on the 12th it's a disappointment when his wedge in comes up 40 feet short from just 88 yards.

The short irons have been a problem for McIlroy over the years - he'll need to sharpen up to take advantage here.

  6. Postpublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick E, Rahm -1, Smith E (1*)

"Go hard. Go. Go!" Jon Rahm is talking to his ball as it flies from the tee to the green on the 248-yard par-three 11th. Front edge. Safe.

Matt Fitzpatrick is out with a metal wood and he too is a fraction short, although his ball tip-toes over the front bunker to leave him iwth a 30-footer.

Cam Smith is not quite so bold. His ball plunges into the sand.

  7. Postpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler E, Koepka +1, Woodland +1 (3*)

You have to be wary of Allen's Creek on the par-five 13th as it crosses the fairway at driver distance.

Scheffler, Koepka and Woodland all safely controlled off the tee and short of any water trouble.

Still 300 yards left for this trio.

  8. Pars all roundpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth +1 (2*)

Shane Lowry gets a bit of lip he didn't want as a very positive putt just catches the left side of the 11th hole and stays out, from about 15 feet.

Viktor Hovland is just wide from similar range while Jordan Spieth salvages a par with a clutch six-to-seven footer to prevent a second successive bogey.

  10. Birdie start for Rahmpublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick E, Rahm -1, Smith E (1*)

Matt Fitzpatrick comes up short of the green with his second shot on the 10th, his first. And he's a little tentative with the chip, leaving himself a four-footer to save par.

Cameron Smith is a little off target with his wedge and then races a 22-footer a couple past.

But here's Jon Rahm, he's got a 15-footer for birdie after an arrow straight second pulls up a fraction short. And that looks in from the moment it left the face of the putter. Perfect start.

  11. Crushed!published at 15:44 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy E, Morikawa E, Thomas -1 (2)

Driving the ball has always been a strength of Rory McIlroy - and you won't see a better one this week than the 327-yard bomb he's just unleashed at the 12th.

He's taken on the narrow part of the fairway on this short par four but he's smoked this one, found position A+ and left himself just 88 yards in.

  12. Postpublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler E, Koepka +1, Woodland +1 (3*)

Koepka finds the bank left of the green with his second shot on the 12th and it's an awkward lie to get close. He digs it out but is wayward with his putter and misses from seven feet. He's frustrated to walk off with a five.

Woodland found the sand with his second and chips to within five feet. He misses left though and it's a bogey for the 2019 US Open champ.

Scheffler has a 33-foot putt for birdie and again it's well judged. It's a touch short, but he can safely pocket another par.

  13. Postpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth +1 (1*)

This 248-yard par-three 11th is going to catch some players out - and Jordan Spieth is one of them.

Nice line with the drive but it comes up short on a grassy mound near a bunker.

Viktor Hovland hits the same mound - but gets one of those lucky bounces that leaves us amateurs rolling our eyes in jealousy, and he's on the green, albeit with a long birdie putt of more than 25 feet,

  14. Pars all roundpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    McIlroy E, Morikawa E, Thomas -1 (2*)

No shots picked up by our marquee group with three the magic number for all of them.

McIlroy almost pulls a rabbit out of the hat with a 42-foot effort that just misses the target and leaves him a tap-in for par.

  15. Postpublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler E, Koepka E, Woodland E (2*)

Perfect tee shot from Scheffler to start his par-four 12th, pinged 280 yards down the middle of the fairway.

Koepka joins him and they will only have a pitch of 130 yards to the pin for their second shots.

  16. Bogeys for Spieth and Hovlandpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hovland +1, Lowry E, Spieth +1 (1*)

Not a great start for one of our marquee groups.

Jordan Spieth leaves himself with a tester from 15 feet and it rolls wide.

Viktor Hovland, dressed nattily in his trademark orange, a bit closer in but it's not easy and he misses too.

Better start for Shane Lowry, who made par and has just hit his drive to within 15-20 feet on the par-three 11th.

    Fitzpatrick (15:23 BST)

Matthew Fitzpatrick and Billy FosterImage source, Getty Images

When it comes to player-caddie relationships, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Billy Foster are pretty tight.

They'd have to be given that Foster has previously compared Fitzpatrick's putting to Edward Scissorhands.

Nowt wrong with a bit of a laugh and some blunt honesty from time to time eh.

  18. Rahm away wellpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Fitzpatrick, Rahm, Smith (15:23)

Do reigning major champions suffer from first-tee (well, 10th really) nerves? Let's find out...

World number one Jon Rahm is first up. Four wins already this season, including that Green Jacket at Augusta. A familiar quick swing and his ball is away and bounds down the fairway.

US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick is slightly left, in the first cut of rough, while Open champion Cameron Smith drills down the middle.

  19. Koepka chips in to save parpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Scheffler E, Koepka E, Woodland E (2*)

Almost as though he'd planned it.

No problem for Koepka who chips in from the rough at the edge of the green to rescue his par. Cue appreciative roars from the fans his tee shot had cleared out of the way five minutes ago.

Scheffler and Woodland also roll in to complete another trio of pars.

  20. Who's Higa?published at 15:25 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Higa -4 (5*)

So, what do we know about our surprise leader?

Kazuki Higa has won six tournaments on the Japanese Tour but he's only played four times on the PGA Tour this year, missing the cut twice and a tie for 36th being his highest finish.

He qualified for this year's Masters but missed the cut at Augusta. Yet, he leads the way at Oak Hill after four birdies in his opening five holes.
