Edwardstone may have missed out on the Cheltenham-Aintree double after defeat in the last race but Flooring Porter is aiming to achieve the feat after his Stayers Hurdle win last month.

There were wild scenes of celebration when the Gavin Cromwell-trained seven-year-old won at the Festival and there could be more if he triumphs on his first visit to Aintree.

The only question is how much the Cheltenham race has taken out of him.

Thyme Hill, who was runner-up to Flooring Porter at Cheltenham and won this race last year, is a danger, along with Champ.

Gentleman De Mee was an impressive winner of our last race at Aintree.

Afterwards, trainer Willie Mullins said that the six-year-old will probably be aimed at next year's Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

If I was riding in the Grand National and couldn’t ride Any Second Now (trained by her father Ted) I’d like to ride Longhouse Poet.

He ran well in the Thyestes Chase in Ireland – he runs and stays well. He was disappointing when he ran at Navan but comes here in good form and has a nice weight on his back.

He came over in the same lorry as Any Second Now and they both travelled well.

Some sad news to report on Elle Est Belle from the second race of the day.

An Aintree spokesman said: "Sadly Elle Est Belle sustained a fatal injury close to the finish. Captain Conby got up."

It was the second equine fatality of the meeting. Solwara One pulled up whilst travelling on the flat in the opening race on Friday and vets said the horse suffered an untreatable injury.
