How long does it last? The winner usually completes the course in about nine minutes. There are 30 jumps, including Becher's Brook and The Chair, over a distance of four and a quarter miles.

What does the winner get? The total prize fund is £1m with the winning team collecting £500,000.

Why are there different weights? It is a handicap steeplechase with runners allocated weights according to their ratings.

How many Grand Nationals have there been? This is the 174th running of the race.

What about safety? Significant changes were introduced before the 2013 race which saw the core of fences softened, the distance reduced and new procedures for loose horses. There was one equine fatality in the race last year - the second from a total of 316 runners in the past eight editions.

Today's card starts with a competitive-looking hurdle race.

Winter Fog was moved to the Emmet Mullins yard this year and was a promising fourth in the Pertemps Final at last month’s Cheltenham Festival but could improve for that.

Party Business and Remastered are among the other challengers but there are plenty with chances.

Fair play to this chap. I rarely deviate from a black suit and get self conscious if I've got a purple tie on.

The spectators are arriving and the Grand National is just under four hours away but we've plenty of racing before then with the first of the day coming up shortly...

It isn't even a month since Rachael Blackmore made more history, winning the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup at Cheltenham to complete the full set of jumping’s three biggest races in little more than a year.

She is the only current jockey in the weighing room to have won the Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup and Grand National.

More history awaits Blackmore today because victory would make her the first jockey to win the treble in one season since Tommy Cullinan in 1930.

It was a mixed morning on the weather front on Merseyside - with one heavy shower but also sunny periods, with a breeze which could see the ground dry out a little.

Aintree’s clerk of the xourse Sulekha Varma said: “Last night’s watering went smoothly. We are now back where we started yesterday morning, which is to say Good to Soft, Good in Places on the Mildmay & Hurdle courses, and Good to Soft on the Grand National Course.".

Twelve months ago Rachael Blackmore made history, becoming the first female jockey to win the Grand National.

It was an achievement that launched her into global stardom, but one that deserved significantly better than to be celebrated in front of empty stands at Aintree because of the pandemic.

Today, though, Blackmore and Minella Times go for victory again and this time there will be 70,000 fans hoping to cheer her on to a stunning double.
