    The sun is shining after mixed conditions today with hail and blistering cold wind. But we have blue skies now for the race that all eyes will be on. The race that stops the nation.

    Forty horses and their jockeys have to complete two laps of the course, covering four-and-a-quarter miles and jumping 30 fences.

    The Chair is the tallest of the 16 fences at 5ft 2in but along with the Water Jump only features on the first lap.

    The 14 other fences, which include Becher's Brook, Canal Turn and Valentine's Brook, are jumped twice.

    The course takes around 10 minutes to complete.

    Back in April 1992, election fever was sweeping the country with a general election to be held five days after the Grand National.

    And appropriately, it was the 14-1 chance Party Politics who crossed the Aintree finish line first.

    Ridden by Carl Llewellyn and trained by Nick Gaselee, it was a popular winner for the once-a-year punters who were attracted by the name.

    Party Politics finished two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Romany King and it was the first of two Grand National wins for Llewellyn, who also triumphed on Earth Summit in 1998.
