Given the size of the field, the speed of competition, the distance you're viewing from - it must be one of the toughest jobs in sport, that.

Few people will have a better view of the Grand National than BBC Radio 5 Live commentator John Hunt.

He told me: "It's a big thrill calling the race, The adrenaline comes from wanting to do the event full justice.

"There's a real buzz and you're aware people will be listening in all parts of the world.

"I don't really have prepared lines but you have to think about what might have impact.

"I fancy Limerick Lace to run well and know a female horse hasn't won the race since 1951. Everyone loves the Kitty's Light story and another victory for Rachael Blackmore (Minella Indo) would be big too."

Trainer Willie Mullins has eight runners in the National and says five or six of them have a chance of winning. Could be a great day for the legendary trainer - though I suppose he's guaranteed at least seven non-winners...

Jockey Leighton Aspell celebrated the first of his Grand National wins 10 years ago when the 25-1 chance Pineau de Re triumphed by five lengths.

Trained by Dr Richard Newland, the French bred horse took the lead on the approach to the last of the 30 fences.

He pulled away to win by five lengths from Balthazar King and Richard Johnson with Double Seven, the mount of Tony McCoy in third.

The following year Aspell was victorious again on Many Clouds.

Impressive 2023 winner for Scottish trainer who also triumphed with One For Arthur seven years ago. Carrying a stone more in weight this time but two-time Cheltenham Festival winner showed wellbeing when third in Gold Cup last month. Well backed following that run and bidding to be only second horse (after Tiger Roll) to win twice since Red Rum in 1970s.

He can be quirky, but I'm hoping Mr Incredible will be on his best behaviour and can go one better than his smart second in the Midlands Grand National.

  9. 'I do approve of the changes'published at 15:29 British Summer Time 13 April

    Grand National (16:00 BST)

Two-time Grand National winner Ruby Walsh, speaking to ITV: "I do approve of the changes and Aintree have put a lot of work into it. As the race evolved and moved forward, the riders were pushed towards the middle of the course. In 2023, only a third of the track was being used and that is why six runners had to be taken out. A standing start will hopefully keep them spread out from the start."

Only Tiger Roll (2008, 2009) and the great Red Rum (1973, 1974) have won the National back to back in the modern era.

Can last year's champ Corach Rambler and jockey Derek Fox join them in the annals of history?

First National runner for trainer, who just missed out with first reserve Some Neck in 2021. Looked set to win the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last year before falling two fences from home. Saved for this since a fine runner-up in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury in December. Would be really suited by soft ground. Mission possible.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Amberleigh House’s Grand National win but it is tinged with poignancy after his jockey Graham Lee suffered a serious spinal injury in a fall at Newcastle last year.

Amberleigh House gave legendary trainer Ginger McCain his fourth victory in the race, 31 years after his first with Red Rum

After the well-fancied Hedgehunter fell at the last, the 16-1 chance held off Clan Royal and Lord Atterbury to spark wild celebrations for the horse who had finished third 12 months earlier

Over his career, Amberleigh House ran in the Grand National five times and after his final run in 2006 where he was pulled up before fence 21, he was retired.

Won the mares' chase at last month's Cheltenham Festival for third victory from four runs this season. This is a significantly longer distance than anything she has tried before. Jockey chose her over Meetingofthewaters. Owned by Limerick-born billionaire JP McManus who hopes to net the big prize for a third time after Don't Push It in 2010 and Minella Times three years ago.

  15. 'He's not a good jumper!'published at 15:17 British Summer Time 13 April

JRL Group Liverpool Hurdle (15:05 BST)

Strong Leader's winning jockey Sean Bowen, speaking to ITV Racing: "He's a difficult horse to ride and he's not a good jumper at all and I had to pick my way round, and find a bit of room. I didn't want to be there too soon and get beat because of that.

"It's great to do it with [trainer] Olly Murphy, we've got a great relationship. He has been a great supporter of mine - I let him get on with it, he lets me get on with it and it works."

1 Mr Incredible; 2 Vanillier; 3 Panda Boy; 4 Delta Work.

If he jumps off OK from the standing start, Mr Incredible has a great chance. He was travelling sweetly last year before his saddle slipped, should love the ground and had a great prep run.
