The 207 seeds planted at the Olympics opening ceremony, representing each of the delegations that will participate in the games, will be planted and turned into a small forest in Rio.

But in an interview with BBC Brasil, biologist Mario Moscatelli – an activist who campaigns for the clean-up of Guanabara Bay – the segment is "nothing more than a marketing piece and a carnival act”.

"It is not the mission of athletes to save nature - they are here to compete,” he adds.

“There will be 12,000 trees, and I hope that at least 10% of them survive. Planting is easy, care is difficult. Let's see how many survive in a year."

Keep your eyes out for the island of Tuvalu with one athlete at the Games. Etimoni Timuani is a sprinter and a professional footballer in his homeland. He's had a table for one at the village all week.

Bhutan have two athletes here. They have an archer with the name Karma. No other names, just Karma. She'll reap what she sows.

Well, as fascinating as watching over 10,000 athletes walk out of the tunnel is, it's a bit repetitive. So here's the Mardi Gras celebrations

Big noise for the Americans, who are watched by John Kerry. They are wearing jackets which light up, apparently.

Swimmer Michael Phelps carries the flag, ahead of the biggest team at the Games, some 560 strong.

If Phelps entered the all-time table on his own he would be 43rd. He's won 18 golds. EIGHTEEN.

Excuse my ignorance. They had six athletes in London, and have five here.
