BBC World’s Peter Okwoche has been talking to Rio locals who have been gathering in the Fanzone to watch the ceremony.
Marina tells him that what she has seen is “great”.
“I don’t know if this the best moment for us to have the Olympics, because we are having a lot of problems. But I feel so happy to be here and see it happening in my country. I don’t know if Brazilians will be behind it, but they will enjoy it. And hopefully afterwards, we will find a better way for our country.”
Delighted to see that the Croatian national team are decked out in the red-and-white chequered tracksuit, much like the football kit. Fantastic.
Big ovation for Cuba too. They tend to excel in the boxing ring.
