    BBC World’s Peter Okwoche has been talking to Rio locals who have been gathering in the Fanzone to watch the ceremony.

    Marina tells him that what she has seen is “great”.

    “I don’t know if this the best moment for us to have the Olympics, because we are having a lot of problems. But I feel so happy to be here and see it happening in my country. I don’t know if Brazilians will be behind it, but they will enjoy it. And hopefully afterwards, we will find a better way for our country.”

    The British team includes its most experienced athlete ever at an Olympic Games with equestrian's Nick Skelton set to compete at his seventh Games. SEVEN!

    Team-mate John Whitaker is competing at his sixth while London 2012 gold medallists Sir Bradley Wiggins and Katherine Grainger as well as Jo Pavey are taking part in their fifth.

    Having claimed seven medals from his four Olympic appearances to date, one more podium finish will see Wiggins become Team GB’s most decorated athlete in Olympic history.
