As gold medal hopes go, Heather Stanning and Helen Glover would be the ones that the British chef de mission would put their mortgage on.

Defending champions from London 2012, they arrived in Rio 2016 on  an unbeaten that stretched back to 2011 and 36 races.

Here we go. The Danes are the threat.

While the British hopes wait to continue women's  skeet qualifying, there's a decent crowd packed into the men's 50m rifle prone final - that's shooting while flat on your belly.

It's like a bowling alley with bullets in here and every second or two there's the "clip, clip" sound of one leaving the rifle. No British hopes here, Italy have two finalists qualified including Nicolo Campriani who has won gold in the air rifle discipline at this Games already.

There's one Russian in the eight-strong field.

Gary and Paul O'Donovan add Olympic silver to their European crown.

Before the race they told RTE that their tactics when the going gets tough were to "shut their eyes and pull like a dog".

Short on technical insight, high on effectiveness.

Norway have a slab of copper to take home.

Ilse Paulis and Maaike Head are three quarters of a length clear of anyone else as they cross the line and finally collapse into a joyful puddle of lactic and sweat.

They are met by a clutch of swimming fans. That is fans who are swimming rather than fans of swimming.

Brave people. Probably ill people tomorrow.

Canada and China fill the next two spots on the podium.

    A great moment.

Biel, who fled civil war in Sudan and spent 10 years in a refugee camp in Kenya, was only one place adrift of Britain's Elliot Giles (1:47.88) whose dreams of a medal are over for this Games.
