Yiech Pur Biel fled Sudan to escape civil war. He spent 10 years in a refugee camp in Kenya, home to more than 179,000 people.

“In the refugee camp, we had no facilities – even shoes we didn't have,” Biel says.

“There was no gym. Even the weather does not favour training because from morning until evening it is sunny and hot.”

Today Biel trains in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. While he is not expected to claim a medal in Rio, he says: “Even if I don’t get gold or silver, I will show the world that, as a refugee, you can do something.”

Defending champion Jessica Ennis-Hill got her heptathlon campaign under way in fine style on the first morning of competition.

Ennis-Hill ran 12.84 seconds in winning the fourth heat to give herself an early lead after the first of the seven events.

In damp, cold conditions her compatriot and rival Katerina Johnson-Thompson finished second in the third heat in 13.48 secs to lie 11th.

Brianne Thiesen Eaton, considered the main danger to the two Britons, lies sixth.

The hurdles are one of Ennis-Hill’s strongest events, and while this was down on the extraordinary 12.54 secs she clocked on the first morning in London four years ago, the wet track and consistent drizzle rendered this an excellent start.

Shooting is a tough one for commentators to stay across, especially at the qualifying stage where 21 athletes are spread over three ranges.

It's a good job Rob Nothman at BBC 5 live has this screen to hand then.

It's up to the minute and provides a decent chance for us to make sense of it all.

Jessica Ennis-Hill will be really pleased with that time (12.84 seconds). The conditions are not great, it will be a bit chilly and so on reflection she will be pleased.

Off trots Elena Allen of GB, like Amber Hill she goes 23 of 25 in qualifying. A reminder there are 75 shots to be fired.

Allen has a moment of concern midway through the round as her shotgun double fires meaning some quick maintenance is needed. Her husband and coach Malcolm (pictured), takes it away for a quick fix.

Italian Diana Bacosi is the only athlete to card 25/25. The Britons are tied for sixth and six of 21 will qualify.
