Brazil's interim president Michel Temer has decided not to attend the closing ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games scheduled for Sunday 21 August in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium, fearing that hostile demonstrations against him could damage his image, Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported on 15 August.

To justify Temer's absence from the closing ceremony, the government had asked the foreign ministry to review the protocol on whether he should attend or not. The ministry's answer was that the attendance of heads of state at Olympics closing ceremonies was not common.
