    Hammer qualifying

Great Britain's Chris Bennett is clinging to the top-12 spot he needs to make the hammer final by the quick of his fingernails.

His second throw of 70.47 is good enough for the final qualifying spot as it stands.

Team-mate Nick Miller however has fouled his second throw and all is now resting on his final effort.

    Welcome to last-chance saloon.

    News from around the globe

French business daily Les Echos has today, external looked into Team GB's success under the headline "Why do the British swipe so many medals?"

The paper, referencing GB's third place in the medal table at London 2012, asks: "Clearly, Britain wins, but is it really a surprise?"

To understand why Britain is doing so well this year, one needs to take a look at Russia, it notes, calling the Russian team "a direct competitor" to Team GB.

"This year, the Russian delegation was heavily penalised," Les Echos adds.

Speaking about Britain's successes in Rio, the paper stresses that the number of athletes is crucial: "The equation is simple: [having] more athletes is almost a guarantee of having more chances for medals."

Having sent 366 athletes to Rio, Team GB ensured it has more participants than at any Olympics since 1992, except for 2012 when the UK hosted the tournament, Les Echos notes.

"I am in the shape of my life and I know it will take that for the medals but I am confident that I can get close to the times the girls are running."

GB 470 pair Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark admit they've had a sleepless night as they prepare for their medal race, having all but secured the gold medal.

All the London 2012 silver medalists need to do is negotiate the course safely to confirm their place on the top of the podium.

Despite "tiredness and feeling a bit jittery" they told BBC Sport sailing reporter Shirley Robertson that they "would still race hard out of respect to their fellow sailors" where medals are still to be decided.

Double Olympic champion Robertson had one piece of advice at the end of the interview: "Go out and enjoy it."

You can watch their race live from 1705 BST on the BBC Red Button.

The AIBA - who run world amateur boxing - have admitted that there have been problems with the officiating and judging at some bouts at the Games.

"Less than a handful of the decisions were not at the level expected and consequently it has been decided that the concerned referees and judges will no longer officiate at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"In accordance with AIBA Rules the result of all the bouts will stand."

    800m

Caster Semenya strides clear of the stress and straining going on behind her to win her heat in 1:59.31 - still four seconds off her season's best.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke cannot quite overhaul the United States Ajee Wilson in the home straight, but her efforts are rewarded with a decent time of 1:59.67,

Will that be good enough for one of eight fastest loser spots?

Semenya was allegedly asked to take the hormones to suppress her testosterone levels and put her at a disadvantage so that wasn’t fair.

But what is also unfair is the talk about it as Semenya. It is not just her in this issue of elevated testosterone.
