"I have been training my butt off"published at 14:54 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

Great Britain's Andrew Butchart who reached the 5000m final on BBC One: "You have got to make yourself known to these guys, I was unknown to the majority of the field before the race and hopefully after today they will keep an eye on me in the final.

"I have never been in this situation before. My aim was to make the final and now I will see what I can do.

"I have been training my butt off and it shows that if you can put the effort in, you can get the benefits."

The Scot is from Dunblane and he said he spoke to the town's most famous son before his race.

"I spoke to Andy (Murray) after his final. He wished me good luck and good luck to him in Cincinati if he is watching."

    Men's 5,000m

Tom Farrell after finishing 20th, a minute outside of his personal best: I've had a fairly tough year and I knew it would be a tough ask for the final but it just hasn't happened for me today.

We are going to have to go back and assess it with my coach but I'm honoured to make the Olympics.

'I need to rest now'published at 14:49 British Summer Time 17 August 2016

    Athletics

Mo Farah's been speaking on BBC One after qualifying for Saturday's 5,000m final.

The first question he's asked is about tripping up on the final lap...

"I got clipped at the end," he said. "I just had to stay strong and now I've got to recover. It's hard work in this heat so I've got to rest up now.

"Sometimes you've just got to get through it and see how it goes.

"I haven't recovered from the 10k as well as I wanted. I just need more rest now, put my feet up and chill in my room."

Two laps to go in the second heat of the 5000m and Great Britain's Andrew Butchart pushes the pace on at the front, perhaps conscious that he might need a fastest loser spot rather than rely on getting into the top five.

The Sydney Morning Herald highlights, external Australia’s lack of medals in Rio as somewhat of an expensive failure.

“Australia’s underwhelming performance in Brazil is set to come at a cost of as much as $11 million per medal to the taxpayer,” it says.

The report adds that Australia has tried but failed to take a leaf out of Team GB’s funding strategy in its search for Olympic success.

“In all, $340m has been injected into summer Olympic sports using the national lottery funding model adopted by Great Britain in the lead-up to its home Olympics as an inspiration.

"But while Team GB, with £274m ($466m) pledged to their Olympic sports between 2013 and 2017, are still enjoying the afterglow of London by punching well above their weight here, the jury is still out for Australia's programme.”

Nervous qualification from Farah, those invisible trip-wires that appear on the track in crowded, anxious heats like this almost ending his hopes of an Olympic distance double-double in the worst possible way. One fall in a critical race quite enough, obrigado.
