Two-time reigning Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar, 22, of Slovenia is among the favourites along with another of the Tour's standout riders, Wout van Aert.

The Belgian proved himself to be the ultimate all-rounder at the Tour with stage victories in a time trial, mountain stage and the bunch sprint on the Champs-Elysees.

The most important thing for [Emily Craig and Imogen Grant] is to go through in a strong position at this level.

But there is plenty more to come. I think they will come back strong from this. Every new race is a chance to learn and develop - and you learn very fast at this level.

Every time we see them next, they will be a little bit better for that.

    Men's road race

The Tour de France only finished a few days ago but many riders who took part in that are in Tokyo for the men's road race which is about to get under way.

GB's team features winners of all three of cycling's Grand Tours - Geraint Thomas (Tour de France), Simon Yates (Vuelta a Espana) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Giro d'Italia).

The hilly Tokyo course could favour them, but Thomas and Yates suffered heavy crashes at the Tour de France and a lot will depend on how they have recovered.

    Mixed doubles group stages

It's a case of deja vu for Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith.

They've won their first group match of the mixed doubles, beating France's Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue 21-18 21-17.

Last time they did that, they added a sparkling gold medal to their names...

By the way, songs such as 'I Shot the Sheriff' by Eric Clapton and Elton John's 'I'm Still Standing' are now played during top-level shooting competitions. The playlist of 55 songs was introduced to make shooting more spectator friendly. There's some rock music blasting out of the speakers right now at the Asaka Shooting Ranger, where there are no spectators.

The 32-year-old judkoa is in the -60kg event in what is his third Olympics. His opponent is 2021 World and European Championship bronze medallist Karamat Huseynov of Azerbaijan.

Anyone for judo? The sport that originated in Japan in the late 19th century and made its Olympic debut in Tokyo 57 years ago will get under way in about half an hour at the Budokan, a concert venue where the Beatles and Bob Dylan performed.

Team GB's preparations have been far from ideal. The 2019 world bronze medallist Sally Conway retired in February. Then an outbreak of the coronavirus at a training camp saw the whole team miss April's European Championships.

A six-strong team has managed to make it to Tokyo - including a reality TV star.

The honour fell to Naomi Osaka to light the flame, the beacon of hope the Olympics attempts to be.

It marked the official opening of Tokyo 2020, a year later than planned, and in the midst of a global pandemic.

Perhaps as expected, Friday's opening ceremony was not of the usual ilk. No carnival like Rio, no skydiving monarchs like London, but a more sombre tone, a sobering reminder that this is a Games taking place in a world still facing its toughest challenge.

This Games is going to be different, dampened by masks, positive tests and the absence of fans. But it is still the Olympics; still the greatest show on Earth, still faster, higher, stronger and now together.

Another gold for Whitlock?published at 02:12 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

    Men's artistic gymnastics team qualification

Double Olympic champion Max Whitlock leads Great Britain's four-man artistic gymnastics team. The 28-year-old is competing in his third Olympics. The problem with being the most successful British gymnast in history - 31 major medals and counting - is the expectation it brings.

"The pressure has completely rocketed through the roof," Whitlock said earlier this year.

"Knowing that if I do not come back from Tokyo with a gold medal around my neck, people will feel like I haven't done my job properly. That's quite tough."
