These are quite steep roads. Another 5km down the road and it starts to become more of a consistent, steady climb.

Olympics Games executive director Christophe Dubi says athletes will be punished if they ignore anti-covid measures.

Most of the Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan team members, along with Pakistan’s two flagbearers, did not wear masks at the opening ceremony.

"It’s really important how we go on message constantly to remind people how important it is to use the mask," Dubi said at this morning’s IOC briefing.

"This was something that was done yesterday, it was repeated to the Chef de Missions and we will continue to repeat this.

"Now if you have blatant behaviours that are absolutely unbearable we will definitely take action, but it starts by informing and repeating this information so that we don’t see too many people without masks, that’s absolutely clear."

Want to know how hard these athletes are at the Olympics?

Jamaican 1500m runner Aisha Praught-Leer says she will still be competing at Tokyo 2020 despite tearing her meniscus "off the bone" in a freak training accident. The 31-year-old picked up the injury on Sunday and was told she would need surgery.

However, Praught-Leer has decided to delay that until after the Games to enable her to compete. "I will line up in Tokyo," she wrote on Instagram., external

"Both Polly and I have been motivated and touched by everyone's support. It's meant a lot - and it's meant a lot that our journey has meant something.

"And getting to this next round means it's another chance for us to go out there and see if we can progress the way we want to.

As mentioned earlier, Tokyo is experiencing some intense heat and that is already having an impact on the Games.

A Russian archer fainted during Olympic qualifying. Svetlana Gomboeva, 23, collapsed while checking her scores. She regained consciousness and left on a stretcher.

With temperatures of around 33C in the archery dome on Friday, athletes had challenges with hydration and staying cool, while support staff huddled in shaded areas.

Earlier this week experts said Tokyo's heat and humidity could pose a significant threat to competitors.

Monday's rowing races have been switched to Sunday to avoid "unrowable" conditions.

"First race of the Olympics, it's a good marker for us to step up from. I think we have qualified for the next round, we know the semi-finals are going to be tough, so I think we are just taking it quite pragmatically - the first race done."
