  1. 'Exceptional archery within us'published at 04:05 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

    Mixed team event

Team GB archers Patrick Huston and Sarah Bettles on their victory over China:

Huston: "I think we shot at a really high standard – the two of us have some exceptional archery within us and we demonstrated that with really tight, consistent groups.

"Frankly, I think I’ll go and lie down in the big, air-conditioned building and switch off for an extended period of time [before facing Mexico in the quarter-finals]. I’ll stick my headphones in, put some nice, relaxing music on and turn off for the next while."

    On competing with no fans:

Bettles: "I enjoy it without the fans! Don’t get me wrong, I do love the atmosphere when the fans are there but I don’t always notice it because I kind of just zone in on me and the target and I forget about the fans.

"It’s only really when we’re standing, talking, not shooting that I’d notice people around. We still had some of our team sat up there, which was nice anyway."

Dutch rower tests positivepublished at 03:56 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

Dutch rower Finn Florijn, who was due to take part in the men's single sculls repechage race, has tested positive for coronavirus, the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation (KNRB) has said. The 21-year-old has gone into quarantine and will no longer participate in the Games.

His case comes after a staff member of the Dutch rowing team, as well as two other Dutch athletes - taekwondo competitor Reshmie Oogink and skateboarder Candy Jacobs - also tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.

'Opportunities to win'published at 03:54 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

    Men's road race

    Chris Boardman
Olympic cycling champion on BBC TV

There are about 30 riders who can win this race - legitimately win this race.

It's just such an opportunist race the Olympic Games, always is, and there is no-one who can get a load of riders at the front and control it and dominate it.

So, there are opportunities for everybody who is, individually, good.

A selfie to rememberpublished at 03:52 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

Syria's Hend Zaza, at 12 the youngest athlete competing at the Tokyo Olympics, exited the table tennis tournament in the opening round - and then snapped a selfie with her Austrian opponent to remember the occasion.

Zaza was battling an opponent more than three times her age in 39-year-old Liu Jia in the women's singles preliminary round but showed no sign of nerves.

She maintained her composure despite a 4-0 defeat.

"It was very tough to mentally be prepared for (the Olympics) but I think I somehow managed to overcome this, and this is the part that I think I did the best during the match," Zaza said.

"The main lesson was the loss of this match, especially in the first match. So next time, I will be working hard to pass the first, second, third round, because I want to play more in this competition," she added.

The organisers will be hoping the focus finally shifts from the controversy to the sport. There is so much intrigue surrounding the next two and a half weeks.

How will Team GB fair after coming second in Rio? How will the new sports making their Olympic debuts get on - the likes of skateboarding, surfing and climbing? Which new stars will emerge to replace the likes of Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt who have retired since Rio?

Seonaid McIntosh, who finished 12th in the women's 10m air rifle qualification on her Olympic debut: "I struggled a bit with fatigue and the heat.

“I’m mostly happy with how I fought through it and while the last couple of shots weren’t great, I’m pleased with how I performed.

“I don’t really know about next week - I need to process this first and work out what to take forward. It’s a very different event and it’s about keeping that fight.”

On being the first Team GB medal hope: “I don’t think it was a factor, my sister has been in the same position and it’s not a thing you think about unless you let yourself.”

If this wasn't such a mountainous race, we would be talking about the open hills here and talking about the outskirts of Tokyo.

But because we have got bigger fish to fry - there are bigger mountains ahead - we are not even mentioning them.

There is virtually no flats today. What we do have is very good surface roads, large roads, so even if it rains, it isn't likely to have a huge impact.

They're under way in the men's road race but it's going to be several hours before we know the result.

The route takes in some of the slopes of Mount Fuji, which hosts a 14-kilometre climb as the race moves toward its climax. The race finishes at the Fuji Speedway, where James Hunt won the 1976 F1 World Championship.

The route, which is expected to take six hours to complete, is considered mountainous and favours climbers.

Teams will work together to beat their rivals, while protecting their team-mates to make it easier for a rider from their team to win.
