    Road race

This is the danger point now for the two leaders, this is where a chase can get organised.

If they are going to get together behind, there are 11 riders here, and at the moment, they are all fighting for a bronze.

44 seconds is a big gap. It's up to them now. Do they want to fight it out for bronze? Or do they want to have a shot at the gold?

    Men's road race

Brandon McNulty, the American, and Richard Carapaz from Ecuador are maintaining a lead of 40 seconds over the rest. Frankly, they all look shattered. They've been at it for more than six hours.

Serbia's newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic has rocket-launched his pursuit of the "golden grand slam" with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bolivia's Hugo Dellien in the first round of the men's singles tournament at the Ariake Tennis Park.

The world number one and 2008 bronze medallist will next take on Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff in the round of 32.

It's an advantage now that is slowly building on that fast descent.

It won't take them long to get down here, 10 minutes or more to get to the circuit, but if they are attacking each other, these two medals are gone.

It's a 15km descent. It's hard for the rest to make time on the leaders whist travelling downhill.

McNulty and Carapaz are working together to stretch that lead as they slide down the mountainside. It's more than 30 seconds now. If the rest aren't careful they will only be racing for bronze.

These two riders, Brandon McNulty and Richard Carapaz, can sense an Olympic medal...

They have got room now, enough elastic to stretch and contract - they have got the time.

Tadej Pogacar is a good finisher but he's played his ace card now.

That was it. He did it at the right time and there was nothing else he could do, but he didn't quite have the gap to make it stick.

He had the punch on the climb though...

Chris King: Watching the cycling road race and thinking I’d struggle to walk up that hill, let alone ride up it!

Jonny: One of the best things about The Olympics is learning the nuances of the different sports. Always been interested in TDF but this cycling is something else! Great camerawork as well.

Pogacar tried to put distance between himself and the rest, but a group of riders went with him. Wout van Aert, who will have the best finish of those at the front of the pack, is in there. The Belgian's presence should be a worry to all involved. There's no British interest at the head of the race at the moment.

    Simon Brotherton
    Commentator on BBC TV

Look at how steep it is here.

It is hard via television cameras to convey the steepness of the climb. But when you consider how good these riders are and how slow they are going - it's not quite walking pace but it's really, really steep.

It's a nasty wall at the end of a hot, humid day in the saddle.

This final climb is incredible. Like trying to climb up a down escalator.

Tadej Pogacar, the two-time Tour de France winner, has hit the front. Ominous.
