    Great Britain 1-0 Canada

We have a breakthrough and it's a lovely team goal.

Sam Ward is fed on the baseline and he instantly pulls a ball back for Liam Ansell who slots into an empty net.

Ward's position had sucked Canada's keeper out of his net and the subsequent tee up left Ansell with a routine finish.

GB are on their way to a second win in two matches.

  3. 'I'm just so relieved'published at 04:35 British Summer Time 26 July 2021

Here's more from Adam Peaty on the build-up to history...

"I haven't felt this good since 2016. It just means the world to me. I thought I had the best preparation in my life but then you throw in morning finals, and you throw all that out the window. That's really what it takes to be an athlete. It's not who's the best all year round, it's the best person on the day who's the most adaptable and really who wants it more.

"I did feel a little pressure in the semi-final but that was a good pressure - I needed to go my fastest one. You can do whatever you want in your own pool, in your own nation, in your own race.

"This has closed a chapter for me. There was unfinished business and I want to say thank you to the nation for being behind me for the last five years. Thank you to my family, my gorgeous partner, my gorgeous son, and my family back home. They've been with it every step of the way.

"This victory wasn't mine - it was a great swimming team, my family, my friends. And those people I had to put to the sideline for a moment so I knew it was going to take absolutely every bit of energy to get to this point and I'm glad. I'm just so relieved."

Lauren Williams is making final preparations for her round of 16 -67kg battle with Malia Paseka which is scheduled to start at 05:30 BST.

By the way, Paseka is the first-ever female taekwondo athlete from Tonga to compete at an Olympic Games.

Williams, 22, started out as a kickboxer but got into taekwondo after watching Jade Jones win gold in 2012 while on a caravan holiday.

She became junior world champion in 2014 and won the 2016 European title after only a few months in the senior ranks.

    Great Britain 0-0 Canada

Great Britain's Sam Ward rattles the post in the second quarter against Canada.

He's played through in the inside-left channel and still has a lot to do but he lashes one across the keeper and against the foot of the upright.

It's still 0-0 with three minutes left until half-time.
