By the way, the BBC canteen serves a 'breakfast turnover'. I'd never heard of it before, but it was absolutely superb. Everything you'd expect from a full breakfast, but wrapped in pastry.

    Honestly, it's revolutionary.

I was in a newsagents in Richmond, London and Linford Christie walked in. I was grinning from ear to ear after saying hello as he explained he was in his car, had got lost and wanted to buy an A-Z. Purchase successful, he strolled out, having given me a big smile. The shop owner had no idea who he was, so I explained he'd just met an Olympic champion.

Former Olympic champion Chris Mears, speaking about Simone Biles and the pressure of sport: "I can relate to it. She feels like she has the weight of the world on her shoulders.

"She feels like she's failed and she probably feels very confused and doesnt know what's up or down. You have to applaud it.

"After winning gold in Rio, it was so amazing. It was like all your wildest dreams coming true. Then, for me, I came crashing down.

"I didn't know how to process. No-one teaches you how to process becoming an Olympic champion.

More from Sam Quek: "Simone could have hid in the background. She could have been in the changing rooms and left the world guessing about it, but she didn’t.

"She put her tracksuit back on, got out there and stood on and clapped her team-mates. That, to me, is a champion.

You can’t stand there and second guess what is going on in someone’s head. If people start to compare themselves to other people and say ‘well I can do it, why can’t you?’ that’s really, really going to cause some issues.

"To be quite frank, that’s why some people don’t speak out or seek health or go to the extreme of taking their own life. Quite frankly, it has got to stop."

    BBC One

More from 2016 Olympic gold medallist Sam Quek: "It goes to show that this is no mean feat for Simone Biles. Her safety has to come first.

"What is even more important is that she’s laid down a foundation there for so many athletes and so many people around the world to say ‘do you know what, the amount of pressure, the amount of eyes that were on me in this moment in time, that inside, something didn’t feel right’.

"That she had the bravery and the courage to pull out of the event is just huge."

'Mental & physical health just as important as each other'published at 08:05 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    BBC One

More from Sam Quek, 2016 Olympic hockey champion on BBC One: "We talk about mental health and physical health. They are both just as important as each other.

"Take Andy Murray, for example. He pulled out of the singles because he had a bit of a niggle and he didn’t want to put his doubles opportunity to detrimental effect. Nobody batted an eyelid.

"But because this is a mental health issue, people are now saying that Biles is making excuses. It’s ridiculous.

"To the people who are accusing her of not being a team player and that she just wanted to focus on the individual; again, in my mind, she could not have been more of a team player.

"She recognised that the moves that she was doing, she wouldn’t have been able to execute and get the scores she needed to go and win a gold medal with her team. She trusted her team implicitly that they could do the moves to an Olympic level standard, which they did."

Karen Geraghty: I think that Simone Biles strength is having the courage to admit her feelings in the full glare of the Olympics & not hiding it making her more vulnerable. Go girl.

Kyle: It's sad to see Biles not in the competition but it's 100 percent the right decision. Her health is by far more important. Hopefully she gets well soon and then we can hopefully see her back to her brilliant best.
