Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury had never played doubles together until this Games. You wouldn't have guessed it by watching them.

Of course, Murray is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion who has had ATP/Davis Cup doubles success, while Salisbury is an Australian Open men's doubles champion.

So, perhaps it is not so surprising that two players of this talent have dovetailed nicely.

And the British pair are already ahead in the early stages of their quarter-final against Croatia's Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig. A break in the first game of the match gives them the advantage.

    • Rowing: Great Britain win their first Olympic medal in the men's quadruple sculls.
    • Rowing: Britain's dominance of the men's four ends as their crew veers off course and is unable to win the nation's sixth straight Olympic gold.

Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten finally has an Olympic gold medal after obliterating the field in the time trial.

She won by nearly a minute over the 22.1km course, with Switzerland's Marlen Reusser in silver and van Vleuten's teammate Anna van der Breggen claiming the bronze.

Van Vleuten mistakenly thought she had won the road race on Sunday, but was in fact second to Austria's Anna Kiesenhofer. However there was no denying her the Olympic title in the time trial.

Britain's Anna Shackley finished in 18th place.

The men's race starts at 06:00 BST with Tao Geoghegan Hart and Geraint Thomas going for GB.
