    The 27-year-old Scot defended well against Akane Yamaguchi, but an advance to the knockout stages was not to be.

    Another of the big stories from day four revolved around American gymnast Simone Biles.

    Biles was praised for prioritising "mental wellness over all else" after pulling out of the Olympic women's team final.

    The head of the US Olympic team, many gymnasts, and other sportspeople were among those to praise Biles' decision.

    The 24-year-old withdrew from the event after her vault, saying: "I have to focus on my mental health."

    "You've made us so proud," said Sarah Hirshland, chief executive of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

    "We applaud your decision to prioritise your mental wellness over all else and offer you the full support and resources of our Team USA community as you navigate the journey ahead."

    Kirsty Gilmour opened with a comfortable win in the group stage, seeing off Pakistan's Mahoor Shahzad 21-14 21-14.

    The Scot, who competed for Team GB at the Rio Olympics in 2016, faces a tough match against Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.

    A win for the two-time European Championship silver medallist would see her into the knockout stage – but defeat would see her Tokyo Games come to an end.

    Team GB’s triathlon team secure another silver as Georgia Taylor-Brown fights back from a puncture in the women’s triathlon. GB’s women’s gymnastics team take bronze as does Bianca Walkden in the Taekwondo +67kg.
