More history was then made in the pool, as Team GB won its fourth swimming gold in Tokyo - the first time the swimming team have won that many Olympic golds in 113 years.

It came courtesy of Kathleen Dawson, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Anna Hopkin as they won the inaugural 4x100m mixed medley relay in a world-record time.

Turns out us Brits are pretty good at mixed events.

Day eight was another golden one for Team GB, and historic too.

The British quartet of Jess Learmonth, Jonny Brownlee, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee were crowned triathlon mixed relay champions as the event made its debut at the Olympics.

It meant a triumphant Games farewell for Brownlee, who secured his first gold in his third and likely final Olympics.

He now has gold, silver and bronze medals from three Olympics. "The Olympics? I've completed it," he said.

When I read that last entry I weirdly thought of Irish broadcaster Henry Kelly...

Maybe it's working these odd hours but can just imagine him introducing the live coverage to the theme tune from 'Going for Gold'.

After eight days of Olympic competition in Tokyo, Great Britain has 28 medals including eight golds.

In terms of medals, this is comparable with both Rio 2016 (30) and London 2012 (29) at this stage. Those two Olympics were Great Britain's best since 1908. Team GB are short of both of those Olympics on gold medals though. In London, Team GB had 14 gold medals at this stage whereas in Rio, the team had won 10.Only London 1908 has produced more medals in the first eight days of medals being awarded (51 including 16 golds) - but those eight days were spread across April, May and July when the Games had a totally different format. In addition, Great Britain provided around a third of the 2,200 or so competitors.

Not sure I'd fancy this at the best of times but BMX freestyle has definitely caught the eye at Tokyo 2020.

GB's Charlotte Worthington gave up a career as a chef to train full-time when freestyle was added to the Olympics, and she enters this event as a world bronze medallist.

You can see her go for gold from around 02:10 BST. GB's men's contender is Declan Brooks. He's up from around 03:20 BST.

McCormack guaranteed at least silver after Walsh pulls out of semi-finalpublished at 00:43 British Summer Time 1 August 2021

Team GB's Pat McCormack will fight in the final of the men's welterweight competition after Ireland's Aidan Walsh was forced to pull out of their semi-final with an ankle injury.

The pair were due to fight later on Sunday.

A Team Ireland statement read: "The decision has been made to withdraw Aidan Walsh from the semi-final of the men's welterweight competition at the Olympic Games.

"The Belfast boxer was due to fight in Sunday's semi-final against Pat McCormack, but due to an ankle injury sustained during his quarter-final bout with Mervin Clair, the decision to withdraw him was made in conjunction with his medical team.

"Walsh had initially hoped to compete and waited to give himself every opportunity to do so. However subsequent scans and medical reviews have now ruled out this possibility.

"He will still take home his bronze medal which he won in the quarter-final bout, becoming the 16th (Irish) boxer to bring home a medal from the Olympic Games."

Lots still to come over the next few days of course but this of course is an Olympics like any other.

With safety of paramount for importance for team officials and the organisers alike, there's very little hanging around once events are concluded unlike in previous Games when getting to the closing ceremony would be well worth the wait.

    Let's hear from Oliver Townend

"[Ballaghmor Class] is an unbelievable horse - he's tough and very special.

"For me [the course] is OK but add the terrain, the fences and the Olympic pressure and it becomes highly pressurised for some people, but for me it's fine."

Olympic silver medallist on BBC TV

Why is Oliver Townend (second in the individual standings) going out first for Team GB (leading the team event) and not the anchor leg?

"It could be lots of different reasons. The horse is probably the most experienced and had success so they want to find out from Oliver how the course lies. It could be cooler and some horses perform better when it is cooler.

"Then again it could be team tactics held close to their chest!"

Oliver Townend is looking good on Ballaghmor Class, waltzing around the Sea Forest XC course.

One error can change all that but at the moment this is looking very good for GB.

The finish is now in sight, a flawless start as he lay down an early marker, finishing five seconds inside the time limit to remain on his overnight score from the dressage test.

For the first time since 2004, a men's 100m final will take place at the Olympics without Usain Bolt. Who will be the main man this time around?

That's all a little (well actually a lot) later on (13:50 BST) but before then there's a good chance that GB can add to their medal haul in the final day of action in the pool.
