Italy celebrate stunning winpublished at 10:19 British Summer Time 4 August 2021

    Men's team pursuit

"It's a huge surprise," says Sir Chris Hoy of the Italians' stunning victory.

No wonder the winning riders are covering hands with mouths and thumping their chests with fists as they contemplate their achievement.

Joyous scenes when the Italians dismount and join their support staff in a celebratory huddle.

    "Campiones, campiones, ole, ole, ole...!"

Oh my word. This is CLOSE! Denmark lead at the bell. But there is less than half a second between them - who's got the most left in the tank? ITALY!

And it is another new world record. The Azzurri clock three minutes 42.032 seconds - that's almost eight seconds quicker than Great Britain's winning time in 2016. Wow.

    Men's team pursuit

Oh no! A heck of a crash in the men's team pursuit bronze-medal race as one of the New Zealand riders falls. Fingers crossed he is OK.

The Kiwis were heading for a super-quick time, too. Looks like an overlapping of wheels was the cause.

That gives the bronze medal to Australia. Fine lines...

    Men's team pursuit

ICYMI... Britain's reign as Olympic champions came to a controversial end during Tuesday's semi-final with Denmark.

Hopes of a fourth straight gold ended with a bizarre crash caused by Danish rider Frederik Madsen, who reacted angrily despite being at fault.

Thankfully GB's Charlie Tanfield wasn't seriously hurt and rode again today.

Back to the velodrome then where Great Britain take part in the men's team pursuit.

Following yesterday’s painful defeat – literally following that crash – by Denmark, the three-time reigning champions race the Swiss for seventh place.

The British team of Charlie Tanfield, Ethan Hayter, Ethan Vernon and Oliver Wood put that behind them to cross the line in a rapid three minutes 45.636 seconds.

It's enough to beat the Swiss but only enough to claim seventh place at Tokyo 2020.

Great work from Shauna Coxsey but Iuliia Kaplina is in pieces - a disaster for the world record holder. Like her life's work has all been undone on one foothold.

We'll be moving on to the bouldering and the lead disciplines next...

Excellent ride by Katy Marchant in the repechage.

Very different ride from Marchant this time, waiting at the back to go, and physically was able to dominate.

And she dealt with the pressure really well after having been relegated.

If at first you don't succeed.

Well in Katy Marchant's case she sort of did, winning her heat and then being disqualified.

No issues in the repechage though as the Brit storms round the outside to advance.
