It was a great race, a fascinating race to watch. There is a huge scalp taken for Peres Jepchirchir in beating the world record holder Brigid Kosgei.

The distance between Jepchirchir and Kosgei is looking bigger than the gap between Kosgei and Seidel, can Seidel take heart from that and make one last push.

Into the final kilometre and unless something drastic happens the top three as it stands is going to be the top three at the finish.

It is concerning me how Molly Seidel has veered off to the other side of the road. Maybe she is anticipating the next corner and making a smart move as the other two leaders are looking for her over their shoulder and she isn't where they think she is.

Peres Jepchirchir is disappearing up the road as she pulls away now to go for gold. Brigid Kosgei is second with Molly Seidel holding onto the bronze medal position.

Two kilometres can feel like a really long way when you have run as far as these women have in these conditions today.

Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, in a medal shout and with 4km to go, suddenly stops. Not sure if that's because of injury or she felt the medal shot was no longer realistic.

Kenya's Brigid Kosgei and Peres Jepchirchir are pulling away with Molly Seidel still in the hunt for at least a bronze.

You have to earn respect in the marathon. You have to respect the marathon itself but you also have to respect the other competitors.

Interchangeable in the lead with Brigid Kosgei, Peres Jepchirchir, Molly Seidel, Lonah Chemtai Salpeter and Eunice Chumba around 15 seconds clear of the rest with 6km to go.

Ruth Chepngetich has come to a stop and the world champion's race is over. She'd been leading the early stages but dropped off quite sharply in the last couple of kilometres and is now out.

Around 7km left and Peres Jepchirchir leads.

Another of the highlights from yesterday was Laura Muir winning a superb silver medal, shattering the British record, to finish behind Kenya's defending champion Faith Kipyegon in the 1500m final.

Twenty eight kilometres in and there's a group of around 10 runners that have pulled away from the rest out in front, with Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir leading them.

Laura Kenny's fifth gold yesterday, which follows six Olympic titles for husband Jason, means the Kenny household boasts a total of 11 - the same as Team GB claimed in total at three Games from 1988 to 1996.

The Tokyo triumph was her first Olympic victory as a mother, having welcomed son Albie in August 2017.

"When I fell pregnant, there was a moment two months into the pregnancy where I woke up and said to Jason 'I can't do this, I'm not going to be able to carry on [with cycling], there's just no way.' And here we are," she said.

"All week I've been saying please don't ask me about Albie - I've never missed him so much."

Israel's Lonah Chemtai Salpeter is leading the bunch at the halfway stage of the marathon and those brutally tough conditions are starting to take their toll with a couple of dropouts.

Jess Piasecki is the best placed British runner in 25th at the moment.
