"I was really impressed by two of England's debutants - Josh Hodgson and Daryl Clark. Both added something to the forward pack. Australia and New Zealand will now do their homework on both hookers."

England now have a week to focus for the Aussies, but that tear up against the Samoans is the best preparation that they could have hoped for. Remember, Steve McNamara's side had not played together in almost a year since they were kicked out of their own World Cup by the New Zealand. There's nothing quite like the real thing, is there? Said someone. Once.

    Jamie Peacock
Former England captain on BBC Two

"England were looking much better in the second half but Samoa clawed their way back into the game. The 50 extra tackles in the first half had sapped the energy out of England.

"England will get things right and there is nothing like getting live action in a game. They will know where they need to improve. The way they kicked the ball today was a positive."

"The game hinged on the Joel Tomkins' try which was analysed and analysed by the video referee.

"I think it was a try. The ball went backwards. Someone saying that if you drew a line then it might have not have. But in real time it looked like a try."

"After 60 minutes it was 22-20 and England found a way to win - that is the positive for me. I never thought it would be that pretty but the kicking game very good and the desire to get a result was fantastic."

It was nervy. It was energy-sapping. But England showed courage and character to edge over the finishing line to nick the win they needed. It means they start the Four Nations with a vital victory. Next up? World champions Australia.

Another Samoa set. It's last chance saloon. Two tackles to go - but there's England skipper James Graham to grab back possession. Phew!

But back come Samoa! Joey Leilua looks like he could well be in down the right flank, kicking towards the England try line before regaining possession. The boot of Ben Roberts sends Samoa left but England pair Josh Charnley and Kallum Watkins combine to snuff out the danger.

Wigan half-back Matty Smith has impressed on his England debut and plays some more smart rugby, with an inch-perfect kick, to relieve the pressure on his side. The ball is back in Samoan territory - exactly where England want it.

Five minutes for England to hold on. Five minutes for Samoa to level. Tense. Very tense.

Ben Roberts smashes another high kick towards the England try line. And it is comfortable for Sam Tomkins to gather with few Samoan numbers putting him under the cosh.

England fail to pressure Samoan kicker Ben Roberts as the ball goes out to the left touchline. Winger Antonio Winterstein gathers and scatters English pair Josh Charnley and Kallum Watkins to barge over.

But Kyle Stanley slices wide the conversion from the left touchline. How costly could that be? The two points would have left Samoa another converted touchdown away from victory.
