For the second time today Huddersfield are denied.

Todd Carney makes makes the try-saving intervention, first with a tackle and then to ensure the ball could not be grounded. Real defensive grit there by the Australian half-back to keep out Brett Ferres.

"Catalans winger Fouad Yaha is the club's new sensation, having made his debut just last month.

"It's just a sixth match as a professional for the 18-year-old, but he has already notched up four tries.

"Speaking to one of the French commentators about Yaha, he said the player has a great future ahead of him. One to keep an eye on."

Aaron Murphy defuses real danger on the try line as he gets on the end of a grubber kick from Scott Dureau.

Catalans Dragons had hungry numbers closing in for the first points there.

Poor handling from both sides is really the theme of the game so far.

There are threats and openings at either end, but they fizzle out.

Apparently Smurfs have butter fingers. A knock-on that looked to have been knocked back by Morgan Escare.

Huddersfield get possession 20 metres out from Catalans' line. But a knock-on of their own and a penalty sees play go deep into Huddersfield territory.

"It's difficult for Catalans' fans to get to games having to travel to England from France every other week, but these characters are firmly behind their team today.

"Their English accents cast doubt over whether they are actually from over the Channel or just here in fancy dress."

Morgan Escare gets up with a bit of a hobble and he looks like a giant Smurf as he is covered in blue paint from the in-goal pitch graphics.

Catalans Dragons full-back Morgan Escare is clattered in goal and by Scott Grix and Joe Wardle.

We watch replay after replay looking for a shoulder charge. A head is knocked, a Frenchman goes down and it is a controversial no try.

"You thought Huddersfield weren't asking too many questions in that set, but they got field position and Danny Brough's come up with a great low kick in these wet conditions."

"To give you an idea of how murky the conditions are in Newcastle, a few minutes before the game the floodlights were turned on.

"Thankfully the drizzling rain has just stopped in time for kick off, but long studs will be the order of the day on this greasy surface."

Well that came to absolutely nothing. Huddersfield just run though their six tackles and hand over possession five metres out from Catalans' try line.

One would think they would have tried to really test Dragons' defence with a kick of some sort.

Play brought back for a Giants scrum, going back to where Catalans Dragons knocked on. Field position is there for Huddersfield. But what can they do?

    Francis Cummins
Ex-Bradford coach on BBC Radio Leeds

"For the night game yesterday (Leeds v Wigan) it was a little bit wet under foot, as football grounds tend to be.

"That could affect the handling. Both teams have got big packs and the benches are all forwards, so it looks like it's going to go right down the middle, this one."

Ball spilled and Huddersfield's Jodie Broughton goes racing away down the left touchline. The man has jets, but he is chased down masterfully.

Repeat set here for Catalans Dragons as Scott Dureau has a kick on the last blocked.

Teams are coming out here now at St James' Park and it is a grey, gloomy and, well, a typically inclement day in Newcastle.

Plenty of folks in the crowd are dressed for a party, a poncho or two can be seen in there as well, and they are all bobbing along. However, you quickly realise they are all shuffling to keep warm.

Let's hope the action warms everyone up in a hurry!

  20. Catalans' struggles on the roadpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 31 May 2015

So far this season, Catalans Dragons have won just one game away from Perpignan. That was a 40-4 victory against Super League's bottom side Wakefield in April.

Catalans have had mixed fortunes at the Magic Weekend over the years, winning four and losing four matches. This is their first Magic Weekend meeting with Huddersfield.
