The dust will take some time to settle, after a seismic Grand Final which saw Leeds Rhinos add an eighth Super League title to their trophy cabinet at the expense of Castleford.

Tears will be shed on both sides, for Leeds they will taste of the sweetness of joy - for the Tigers they will flow into bitter puddles.

Departing Rhinos pair Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire both staved off the waterworks as they waved goodbye to Headingley in the semi-finals, but have every right to shed a tear as they waved goodbye in the finest way possible.

It's the end of an era in some respects, with just Jamie Jones-Buchanan now remaining from the Rhinos golden generation.

It's the end of a dramatic season, which Castleford dominated and came so close to capping, before failing to find their form on the big night.

Castleford had to play a more direct game today and I think they were guilty of not doing that. These conditions were never going to complement their skills and they never adapted.

Leeds like to play hot off the offload and shift their attacks - we haven't seen that, but they've played through the middle and it's got them the result.

Leeds faced a transitional period last year and it didn't quite go to script. They didn't start as well as they might have done, but they've grown as the years have gone on and young players have stepped up. What a magnificent story to finish like this.

Castleford have not executed at the right times - or at any time, really - and the look on Luke Gale's face says it all. It's one of utter despondency.

This wasn't a night for the purists - but Leeds Rhinos have Grand Final DNA. Danny McGuire has managed this game brilliantly well, prodding and poking at all the right people. Brian McDermott needs to give him a huge pat on the back.

Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington told BBC Radio Leeds:

"It’s become a habit but it’s a good habit. This has to be the best theatre in the world for Leeds Rhinos, it holds great memories and tonight is another one.

"I think it’s a great lesson in sport. What can happen- a team that was running bottom most of last year has recovered to be champions a year later. Great character in the team, we always had belief and went into this season to give it our best shot.

"Castleford have been the best team throughout the season and great ambassadors for Super League.

"On the night, for Rhinos the experience counted and the knowledge of being at Old Trafford and that we’d been here before counted a great deal for us.

"Castleford will be back and they will win it at some point in the future but tonight was Rhinos night."

Tryscoring Leeds Rhinos winger Tom Briscoe told BBC Radio Leeds:

"Incredible. The journey that this team and this club have been on over the last 18 months... To be here talking about a win tonight is incredible.

"Last year there were some dark moments for this club. I think we were bottom of the league for the majority of it and managed to get ourselves up to ninth. Fighting for survival, to get our place back in Super Leaue - this team we played tonight, we were embarrassed by them at the start of the season.

"Everyone in this squad has contributed this season and we've got to enjoy it tonight."

Castleford have been outstanding, consistently head-and-shoulders above everyone all season. But in a one-off game, with everything against them, Leeds Rhinos have been outstanding.

I think Castleford were masters of their own downfall at times - they were their own worst enemy with regards to their errors. They created opportunites but they didn't quite take them.

If Danny McGuire hadn't got his fingertips to that try early on, it might have been a different story, but he, Stevie Ward and Joel Moon were three of the best players on that pitch tonight.

Castleford will be hurting, and that has to fuel their motivation going forward. They know, now, what it feels like to be here - and next time they get the chance, they'll have to manage the situation. But it won't be too long before they're back.

I think when Kevin Sinfield retired, it left a hole in this Leeds side. He brought management to games and often single-handedly made decisions that won the game. You've seen that from Danny McGuire today - he's made some exceptional decisions that have steered this game for Leeds, and stepped into that role.

Outgoing Leeds Rhinos skipper Danny McGuire told BBC Radio Leeds:

"The lads have been fantastic and deserve a lot of credit. We've had tough times this season but we never stopped believing and we're thrilled to bits.

"We deserved it today - we worked hard for each other and I thought we outplayed a very good Castleford team.

"I'll miss everything about the club and all the boys. It's the start of a new chapter for me next year but I'm definitely going to enjoy tonight."

It certainly won't feel like it right now, but Castleford must reflect on a season where they were the outstanding team in rugby league, giving the sport an injection of life with their vibrant style of play.

166 tries were scored in total, the best in the league, they won 25 of 31 games.

If they can mentally 'pick themselves up' after this defeat, then they can come back stronger in 2018.

Daryl Powell, his staff and his players have to be proud, however much they are hurting right now.

Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott told BBC Radio Leeds:

"Proud and excited and pumped - I can't really believe what we've just done. I think the fact that we finished second after last year and got though to the Grand Final was great - to win it was a chapter I don't think anyone thought we would write.

"We've sent some legends out on a win today. We did it for Kevin Sinfield, Kylie Leuluai and Jamie Peacock last time and we've done it again today. I couldn't be any more proud."

Leeds Rhinos teenage full-back Jack Walker told BBC Radio Leeds:

"It’s incredible. I’m speechless.

"To do as well as we did in defence is absolute class.

"I remember at the start for the season I was playing in the academy against St Helens and I never imagined I’d be playing in the Grand Final.

“[Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow] have had a massive impact on my development and to see them go so early in my career is a bit disappointing but to have played 11 games with them, I’m just over the moon.”

Castleford came into the game with a lack of Grand Final experience but no one had less than Leeds Rhinos full-back Jack Walker.

The 18-year-old only made his debut in April's Challenge Cup win against Doncaster and exploded on to the scene with a hat-trick.

He got the nod today ahead of Ashton Golding and belied that tender inexperience with a fine display.

To boot, he surpasses Stevie Ward as the youngest Grand Final winner - 18 years and 60 days. One to remember.

Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow bow out in the finest way possible, by hoisting the Super League trophy before their teammates after their eighth Grand Final success.

The fireworks and champagne spray out in a blaze of glory. McGuire off to Hull KR, Burrow off to retirement.

Leeds go from ninth last year and the horrors of the Qualifiers to win the comp within 12 months.

Utter, utter jubilation for those in Blue and Amber. Awesome display.

"I was giving in last week, thinking, what am I going to do? I can't believe this week - I've just been right enough to get on the field.

"I didn't even feel my shoulder tonight. I wanted it so much. It's been a special journey, this year - we talked about the problems we've had and the honesty we've created.

"Every week and every game we've worked so hard with each other, and that belief has been created and created, and built up for something special like this. It's magical."

And with that, another Grand Final is over and what a contrast in fortunes between the two sides. Leeds, who finished 10 points behind Castleford after 30 rounds this season, have comprehensively outplayed their opponents and seized yet another Grand Final title.

It wasn’t to be for the Tigers and what a shame it is. The fairytale wasn’t to be. But at least they won’t go down in history as the only side never to score a point in a Grand Final.

The real story tonight is Danny McGuire and what a tremendous ending to a fantastic career. He’s really been the difference. Fair play.

Brian McDermott might have drawn a few chuckles, gasps and heckles when he said after round four's win against Catalan Dragons that his Leeds side could win the Grand Final.

He has been proven right. Not once, twice or three times, four times McDermott has taken a side to the title at Old Trafford.

He has his detractors, even at Leeds, but he keeps delivering. What a track record.

Leeds Rhinos back-rower Jamie Jones-Buchanan spoke to BBC Radio Leeds:

"That was just amazing. Cas have been outstanding all season and I'm sure they'll learn from this tonight, but Danny McGuire was outstanding tonight.

"This time last year we were fighting for Super League survival and we've come back and won a Grand Final. That's credit to the roots that we've got at the club.

"People gravitate to stories, and I think Rugby League needs to tell the world about Castleford - it's been a great story. A town of 40,000 people, most of whom will be here today - everyone needs to get their pen out, get their video cameras out, and tell this story to everyone."

Leeds Rhinos will see Danny McGuire go off to Hull KR next season but he showed just what a quality player he is with a stunning individual display.

He controlled Leeds, kicked magnificently, scored two tries. Peerless work. He has been back to his 2004 standards, at the ripe old age of 34.

I'm older than Danny by the way, so it's no insult.
