A criticism of our squad could be that we don't have a third out and out winger. But who is going to force their way in with Jermaine McGillvary and Ryan Hall? The way they are playing they would be in a world XIII at the minute.

  3. 'England need consistency'published at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2017

    England v Lebanon (09:00 GMT)

England coach Wayne Bennett: "I'm looking for consistency more than anything else - I don't want to go back from last week. We need to repeat what we did last week and then I'd be happy.

"It is slippy out there so a lot of the boys are English based so they are used to the conditions. Lebanon played with a lot of energy last week, we have to match them and play our game."

Mitchell Moses is the guy tasked with the responsibility of leading Lebanon around the park - he was the difference between them and France last week.

He has a great kicking game, can drop the ball anywhere on the field, has great directional play, he has got the full box of tricks with his kicking. But he can run with the ball too.

You need big game players to come up with big game plays and he can do that. The big difference today, though, is whether England will give him time on the ball.

There's rain in Sydney, who knew?

Jermaine McGillvary was talking about a heat wave this week, but it could be a little slippy out there today.

  7. 'It was an emotional week'published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2017

    England v Lebanon (09:00 GMT)

Lebanon coach Brad Fittler: "It was an emotional week, we thought it was important to have time to enjoy what they've done. I look forward to seeing what they do tonight.

"Conditions - got to control the ball as well as we can, the other key for us is that when getting out of trouble we cannot just go one out.

"Any team coached by Wayne Bennett - well, defence has always been his key. If we use the ball and catch the ball I think we can worry them."

England winger Jermaine McGillvary on BBC Two: "We took a lot of positives from the defeat against Australia.

"It was a very tough game, they are not the best in the world for no reason. We defended our line and has some good moves, but there are some silly things that we need to cut out."

On what he knows about Lebanon: "To be honest, I don't know a lot. I don't watch much rugby when I'm relaxing. But I know it is going to a tough game."

    Are they all Aussies? Well...

This year's 24-man World Cup squad features one home-grown player - Raymond Sabat, a 20-year-old outside back who plays with Lycans RL in Beirut, though he does not make the match-day squad.

Four other Lebanon-born and raised players are travelling with the squad to help develop their skills.

And a group of Lebanese coaches and match officials have been flown to Sydney by the Australian government for a series of training courses.

There is a Lebanese community of around 200,000 living in the suburbs of Sydney and most of them are rugby league fanatics.

From that community several stars of the game have emerged, such as Hazem El-Masri, who was the highest points scorer in NRL history when he retired in 2009.

The current Lebanon squad includes players who are household names in Australia - among them, hooker Robbie Farah, the Cedars captain, and emerging star Mitchell Moses.

In the late 1990s, two brothers, John and George Elias, decided to put together a team from the community to play in the Sydney 7s. Then a full Lebanon side was assembled and qualified for the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.

At that tournament they were hammered 64-0 by New Zealand, but only lost narrowly, 24-22, against Wales and drew with the Cook Islands.

On the back of that 2000 World Cup the decision was taken to actually start developing rugby league in Lebanon itself for the very first time.

I think the full-back position is the one position that Wayne Bennett is not completely sold on yet.

I thought Jonny Lomax showed moments of brilliance last week, but Stefan Ratchford has another chance and it will be interesting to see how he plays.

The full-back is that finishing touch - it is about how he produces that final pass or gets into space.

So, a bit of a a surprise here as Stefan Ratchford gets the nod to come in at full back, with George Williams instead starting on the bench.

Williams had looked set to replace Jonny Lomax, who was injured last week. Hooker James Roby, meanwhile, is not named in the match-day squad.

England: Ratchford; McGillvary, Watkins, Bateman, Hall; Widdop, Gale; Hill, Hodgson, Graham, Currie, Whitehead, O'Loughlin.

Interchanges: Walmsley, Heighington, T Burgess, Williams.
