No surprises then, that Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price has tried to tap into that success in the build-up to Saturday's Super League Grand Final against Wigan Warriors.

"I happened to get Kasper Schmeichel in last week, the goalkeeper from Leicester City," Price told BBC Sport.

"They were raging 5,000-1 underdogs when they were fortunate to win the Premier League, and we're in a similar position on Saturday."

If you're going to take inspiration from any fairytale story - sport or otherwise - in the past decade, then Leicester City's against-all-the-odds Premier League success is a good place to start.

The Foxes, who had just about squeaked clear of relegation the previous season, outstripped giants such as Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal to win the title...

It's hard to cast your mind back to a time when the sun wasn't glowing in blue skies after a heat-wave summer (well, maybe not today) but there was a time when our climactic extremes were a little less palatable.

The first of our weather-themed moments comes from Belle Vue, or the Mobile Rocket Stadium as it's now known. Wakefield Trinity were playing Widnes Vikings.

Little more than 27 minutes had passed before referee Liam Moore had to call a halt to proceedings, as, well... I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Nice of Storm Callum to drop by eh? Looks like we're in for the usual torrent of rain over head come kick-off.

Well, it wouldn't be a Grand Final without it, would it?

It was clear up until now, but the heavens have opened and it is pouring down at Old Trafford.

But at least it's not as bad as this...

Wigan 14 - 0 Castleford: Wigan in Grand Final as Sam Tomkins scores in his last outing

England full-back Sam Tomkins says his departure from Wigan Warriors adds no emotional significance to Saturday's Grand Final against Warrington Wolves.

The 29-year-old will link up with Challenge Cup holders Catalans Dragons in 2019 on a three-year deal.

"Grand Final week is important whether you're staying, leaving, retiring or whatever," Tomkins told BBC Sport.

"There's no bigger occasion, the atmosphere of playing at Old Trafford is more special than anything else. The fact I'm leaving doesn't add too much to it."

Right then. Moments of the Season.

We start at the beginning. Castleford Tigers arrived at the Totally Wicked Stadium in upbeat mood, despite their Grand Final humbling at the hands of Leeds Rhinos the previous season.

Daryl Powell's Tigers had regrouped from the disappointment spurred on by the success of an otherwise glorious 2017.

However, on that opening weekend they felt the full force of a St Helens side that was to become the stand-out of 2018.

Ben Barba was at his Steve Prescott Man of Steel best and Saints got their revenge for being dumped out of the semi-finals by Castleford just four months previous.

Can we really be surprised that Warrington are without changes either? Their win against St Helens was as impressive as any given the circumstances.

Kevin Brown - a Wigan lad - starts in the halves alongside the departing Tyrone Roberts. The latter has had his critics but guiding the Wire to a premiership would be some feat.

No place for Ryan Atkins, in what could be one of his last opportunities to win a premiership. It's a harsh world at the top end.

Warrington: Ratchford; Lineham, Goodwin, T. King, Charnley; Brown, Roberts; Hill, Clark, Cooper, Thompson, Hughes, Westwood

    Interchanges: Philbin, Murdoch-Masila, G.King, Patton

Unsurprisingly, on the back of a convincing semi-final victory against Castleford, Wigan are unchanged.

At near full-strength, head coach Shaun Wane has picked all of his departing trio of Sam Tomkins, John Bateman and Ryan Sutton.

Perhaps most crucially, Sean O'Loughlin is at loose-forward. He is a talismanic figure.

Roman Navarrete pips Morgan Escare to the title of first Frenchman to appear in a Grand Final.

Wigan: Tomkins; Davies, Sarginson, Gildart, Manfredi; Williams, Leuluai; Navarrete, Powell, Flower, Greenwood, Bateman, O'Loughlin

    Interchanges: Clubb, Escare, Sutton, Farrell

The ground will tremble, the stands will shake and the noise will grow.

Fireworks will shoot bright, sparking into the air, while wooshes of fire splurt menacingly.

Stalking from the tunnel will emerge the hulking, seemingly-granite-sculpted warriors, ready to engage.

Eighty minutes of brains and brawn, craft and graft, silk and steel. Sumptuous skills and bone-shuddering aggression.

It's rugby league. It's Super League. It's the Grand Final.

For the other, the journey is just beginning. It's already been eventful.

Steve Price and Warrington have already been to one final in a season of sharp contrast to their 2017 struggles.

Grand Final glory - at the club's fourth attempt - would be a perfect way to cap the campaign.

The time has come. Thirty years a player, scout, coach. Tonight, Shaun Wane's Wigan Warriors association comes to an end.

The 54-year-old has won every prize going in that time. He can cement an already illustrious history with a perfect parting gift in another Old Trafford Grand Final.

Will it be another gold ring to add to the 2013 or 2016 honours for the proud Wiganer?

It all boils down to this.

Twelve teams started the race, two will finish it, but only one can win it.
