So that brings to a close the 2018 domestic Super League season, with Wigan Warriors collecting their fifth summer era title and 22nd in total.

They say goodbye to Shaun Wane - off to Scotland Rugby Union; to Sam Tomkins, John Bateman and Ryan Sutton off to pastures new.

Warrington will lick their wounds. But should return stronger and fitter and wiser in 2019.

It's not quite over yet though... we've got England v France on Wednesday and three New Zealand Tests between 27 October and 11 November.

Thanks for being with us all season. We'll be here for the England games too. Until then. Good night.

Warrington came so close, within 80 minutes of being champions after their disappointing 2017 campaign, and there is much to be proud of and positive about.

Under Steve Price they look a well drilled, excellent side. 2019 can be a year of further progress for them, particularly with the signing of Blake Austin - a skilled half-back with NRL pedigree.

Wigan's Dom Manfredi told BBC Radio 5 live:

I can't believe it. Just to be back playing is big enough for me, that was my aim for this year. But to run out with these lads and win a Grand Final is unavailable.

The characters leaving this year deserve that, anything short it would not have been good enough. We would have never forgiven ourselves, so we needed to win.

There will be a few tears tonight and a bit of partying.

  4. 'Outstanding team ethic from Wigan'published at 20:35 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    FT: Wigan 12-4 Warrington

    Brian Noble
Ex-Great Britain coach on BBC Radio 5 live

The team ethic from Wigan was outstanding - they executed their plays and Warrington didn't. They had plenty of opportunities but the kicking, chasing and collective game from Wigan is the reason they've got over the line.

Warrington were the author of their own downfall, they just couldn't finish their plays and their kicking game wasn't as good as Wigan's.

At the conclusion of his final game for Wigan, the tears started to flow for full-back Sam Tomkins.

The England man is off to Catalans at the end of this campaign, once his Test commitments are over.

Tomkins was consoled and comforted by teammate Willie Isa, an emotional end to a successful second spell at the Warriors.

He will collect a hugely significant winners ring.

Wigan, as a team, in the latter stages of this season have looked invincible.

They've not been the Wigan of old scoring point after point but you just cannot score against them.

That's the key to their game and Warrington threw everything, absolutely everything at them.

They moved the ball around, they got it to their wing men more than Wigan did but you've got to get your name on the scoreboard and they just couldn't do that.

"I've got three Tests to go after this, I'm going to miss these lads."

Fully deserved by Wigan Warriors. From the start of the top eight they haven't lost a match.

They were brilliant in the semi-final last week and they've absolutely strangled the life out of Warrington Wolves tonight.

Warrington had their opportunities but they haven't taken them.

  13. 'The defence was outstanding'published at 20:19 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    FT: Wigan 12-4 Warrington

Wigan winger Dom Manfredi told Sky Sports:

"I'm lost for words, I can't believe it. It's unbelievable, full credit to the boys, all I had to do was put the ball down.

"We knew we had to stick in there and there would be an opportunity like that.

"The defence was outstanding, if you don't have it you have no chance."

    Paul Highton

You have to say that Wigan deserved that and they've deserved this win and it is a win now.

The way they've defended, the way they've scrambled and the togetherness they've shown.

I said before the game that the emotion and the magnitude of this game on so many levels, not just because it's a grand final but the calibre of player and the head coach who's got the affiliation of 30 years to that club.

That has been epitomised in that performance today and that try has sealed what has been a fantastic performance.

It's for Shaun Wane - the man who guided this crop of Wigan talents.

It's for Sam Tomkins - twice a Wigan hero, twice bowing out in a Grand Final.

It's for John Bateman - became a man, an England international and a champion at Wigan.

It's for Ryan Sutton - the prop who launched his career at the Warriors and secured a move to the NRL.

It's for Dom Manfredi - back from injury, scores two tries to earn his gaffer the title.

What a performance from Wigan, it's not been remarkable but it's been the slow death of the Warrington Wolves, they've ground it out and they've waited for their opportunity to strike and they struck it with not long left.

    It's well deserved.
