What did I tell you?! Warrington strike again!

Josh Charnley does brilliantly to weave, duck and dive his way through a sea of St Helens players to canter through and touch down with ease.

Ratchford makes the kick, this time, and Warrington lead for the first time in this game.

  2. 'Saints were prodded every which way'published at 15:11 British Summer Time 19 September 2020

    Warrington 4-8 St Helens

Ex-GB coach Brian Noble on BBC One:

"It's a great kick from Austin. They have tried the Saints defence every which way, probed around the middle, gone down the short side, then they go with width and can't get through.

"Often it's about your last opportunity and Austin nails his kick. It is a precision kick, and Gelling can jump and goes up for the catch in a one-on-one."

There's plenty of action for the neutral in this game so far and St Helens are good value for their lead.

But you just get the feeling Warrington aren't done yet after Anthony Gelling got them off the mark.

  4. try

TRY: Warrington 4-8 St Helenspublished at 30 mins

    Anthony Gelling

    What. A. Try!

A stunning kick from Blake Austin sails over the St Helens back line, Anthony Gelling does well to catch it under pressure.

He then turns and immediately grounds the ball and that is sensational.

Stefan Ratchford's conversion attempt cannons off the tip of the right-hand post.

Were Warrington wrongly denied a try for a forward pass?

Steve: What do the touch judge do other than get their steps in? Some one tell Kendall despite the increased lockdown Specsavers is still open.

Well, it's always nice to be constructive with criticism...

    Warrington 0-8 St Helens

Mark Percival has been forced off for St Helens and he's sat tentatively on the sidelines.

He'll be assessed at half-time but hopefully it's nothing major, after he returned from injury for today's tie.

  7. Postpublished at 24 mins

    Warrington 0-8 St Helens

Theo Fages does well to find a pathway through a hole in the Warrington defence.

He invites a kick and chase for the onrushing Kevin Naiqama but there's too much weight on it.

This is a frantic end-to-end match and we're only just past halfway in this first period.

  8. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Warrington 0-8 St Helens

Matty Ashton work onto a Blake Austin offload as he looks to be clean through to run in for Warrington.

However he's brought down by a try-saving Lachlan Coote tackle.

That is absolutely sensational stuff from Coote. He's had a cracker of a game so far.

That earlier disallowed try for Warrington has led to plenty of debate...

Andrew J Riley: Not going to argue with a touch judge who has the best view in the ground...

Martin Bolton: Never a forward pass and touch judge continued to check the line when Mano grounded it, how could Kendall give it?

R: Who'd be a coach? good decision on the forward pass as the hands/arms were throwing it forward

  10. PENALTY: Warrington 0-8 St Helenspublished at 19 mins

    Lachlan Coote

Warrington are judged to be offside and St Helens win a penalty within kicking range.

Lachlan Coote makes no mistake with the boot to pad their lead to eight points.

    Warrington 0-6 St Helens

    Jonathan Davies

"I'm not sure that is forward. Just look at the 10m line. I just think it was a brilliant pass.

"That is a tough, tough call on Warrington. It was a beautiful pass."

  12. NO TRYpublished at 16 mins

    Warrington 0-6 St Helens

Referee Chris Kendall has waved away Warrington's celebrations after Jake Mamo drives to the line.

A forward pass from Stefan Ratchford in the build-up, he judges.

Controversial and replays show it was close, but we continue.

  13. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Warrington 0-6 St Helens

Blimey, quick work from Lachlan Coote keeps St Helens in the lead as the chases down Toby King who's through to race through to the line for Warrington.

However he batters the ball out of his hands and they live to fight another day.

    Saints look rattled, here.

What have Warrington got in response to Jonny Lomax's early try?

Well Blake Austin's just kicked an absolute monster of a 40/20 and, as good as Saints' defence has been in these early stages, that's a cracker of a move from the Wire man.

Warrington now camped in Saints' half, but can they make an impact?

Here's my hot take folks. The artificial crowd noise broadcasters are pumping in has got a lot better over the past few months.

Not on the same level of having actual fans in the ground, but the boffins behind the scenes are earning their crust.

Anyway, away from that, Warrington might have their work cut out here as Saints look well up for this.

  17. try

TRY: Warrington 0-6 St Helenspublished at 7 mins

    Jonny Lomax, goal Lachlan Coote

Some cracking pressing from St Helens as Warrington are forced into a hasty kick away at the turnover deep in their own half.

Jonny Lomax subsequently drives to the line on the counter as St Helens unpick Warrington's defence and he crosses with ease.

Lachlan Coote adds the two with ease right in front of the sticks.

An energetic start to proceedings in a sunny and pleasant September's day in Salford.

St Helens make a valiant drive upfield before the turnover as Warrington put up a brick wall.

Incidentally, the set restart hooter is incredibly loud, which I like.

Warrington v St Helens (14:30 BST)

The players make their way out at an empty AJ Bell Stadium. What a tie this would be with some fans in the ground, eh?

Warrington are the first team to make their way out onto the pitch. Kick-off isn't far away.
