Leeds captain Luke Gale: "What a strange game, a tough game to play in. I thought we were in control and then a bit of anxiety came in during the second half.

"I'm quite emotional. It might take a while to sink in. I hope we did Rob (Burrow) proud."

Salford have done exceptionally well over the last 12 months and getting to the Grand Final was a great achievement, and you felt getting to the Challenge Cup final was a great way to piggy back off that.

Ian Watson deserves a huge amount of credit. He has recruited a bunch of guys who know how to play in big games and they played really well.

But the first 20 minutes when they failed to execute has probably cost them today.

Salford head coach Ian Watson: "There were small margins. The boys didn't lack effort, they were just not smart enough. Luke Gale took his opportunity when it came.

"It's disappointing with the history surrounding the Challenge Cup, because winning it is a special thing."

Leeds director of rugby Kevin Sinfield: "I'm delighted for everybody. It's been really tough through the Covid pandemic.

"I thought we were poor in the second half and made errors but we'll learn so much from that.

"It's fitting that our number seven kicks the drop-goal to win the game. You've seen what Rob Burrow means to the club and our sport. If he's watching at home, and I'm sure he is - this is for you, pal."

Leeds winger Ash Handley: "We made hard work of it but it was great to get over the finish line. Everyone performed against a resilient Salford side. I'm just buzzing."

It has been a fantastic game and Leeds have every reason to celebrate.

But your heart goes out to that Salford side. They have given absolutely everything and have just come up one point short.

What a journey for this Leeds team. Last season, they were dumped out of the Challenge Cup by Championship club Bradford. Today, they're celebrating being back on the top step of the podium.

The trophy presentation is a little bit different in this very different Challenge Cup final.

Leeds' players take their medals from a table and Luke Gale grabs the trophy off a large blue plinth on the field, before lifting it above his head next to his team-mates.

You have to credit the players on both sides. It was a wonderful final that would have been better with 70,000 fans in the stadium.

Salford did well to get back into the game on the back of Leeds errors and then Leeds showed some real grit and composure to nail the drop-goal through Luke Gale at the end.

Salford captain Lee Mossop: "We're devastated. We've worked hard to get here.

"It was probably the first half that took too much energy out of us and Luke Gale had a free shot, he wasn't going to miss that."

Leeds full-back and Lance Todd Trophy winner Richie Myler: "It was close and I'm overwhelmed. We've got a special group of boys. Credit to Salford, that was a hell of a game.

"When adversity comes, you either stick in there or make a thing of it. Twelve months of hard work has got me here.

"I'm in a special team. The way Gale and Lui controlled the game makes it easier for me."

Tears from players on both sides. Joy for Leeds, heartache for Salford.

Credit to both teams - that was a wonderful final. It's sad there has to be a loser.
