    Wigan 0-0 St Helens

Alex Walmsley has a heavily strapped-up knee after he was forced off in St Helens' play-off semi-final win against Catalans last week.

He's looking good so far as he receives a tackle and both sides exchange possession in these early stages.

Prior to kick-off, a moment of silence to commemorate those we have lost during the pandemic as well as to key workers.

The hooter is sounded and we're moments away from this Grand Final getting going.

    Here they come.

The two teams make their way out at a chilly KCOM Stadium and after 10 months, here we are, the Super League Grand Final.

But who's going to cap off this most extraordinary of seasons with the biggest prize of all?

Spinetingling, I think is the word to use for Laura Wright's pre-match rendition of Jerusalem.

Just a pity circumstances dictate that there's not a bumper crowd here to enjoy it.

    Kick-off is coming soon.

I expect a tight game because these are two good sides - they're so good that if one side runs away with it, it will be because other hasn't turned up for whatever reason.

Look at the experience in both teams, and the youthful talent in the Saints team. Even if anyone hasn't been here before they have someone next to them who has.

It's going to be a great contest and I think there will only be a few points in it.

It's the end of the season and it's the showpiece of the entire campaign.

All the struggle, the loss of a team, the pandemic and the glorious comeback albeit without fans, comes down to this.

  8. 'It'll be difficult for both teams to rack up points'published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

Wigan v St Helens (20:00 GMT)

    John Kear
Wales & Bradford Bulls coach on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

These two teams have been the best by a fair distance and I think that was demonstrated in their semi-final victories with neither side conceding a try which may give you an indication to how difficult it will be to rack the points up tonight.

Wigan's Joe Bullock and Brad Singleton will both have their work cut out against Alex Walmsley and James Graham but there are question marks over Walmsley and Graham because both went off injured in their last game. If they are fully fit it might tip the balance to Saints but if they are off it then these young guns from Wigan such as Joe Bullock and Oliver Partington will really ask questions of them.

But whoever gets that platform up front it will allow the pretty boys in the half-backs and at full-back to really shine.

Wigan v St Helens (20:00 GMT)

    Ian Chisnall
    Reporter, BBC Radio Merseyside Sport

I simply can't divide these two sides, it's going to be on the night, whichever side performs better will be the champions.

The most refreshing thing for me is with respect to all of the others is that it's great to have the best two teams in the competition locking horns.

It's going to be a fearsome spectacle.

  13. A very different feelingpublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

Wigan v St Helens (20:00 GMT)

    Matt Newsum
BBC rugby league commentator on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra

Light show at Hull FCImage source, BBC Sport

There’s a whirlwind of emotions accompanying this Grand Final.

Relief, that we’re finally at the sharp end of the strangest season in 125 years of the game.

Sadness, that we’re saying goodbye as players to icons of the game like Sean O’Loughlin and James Graham.

And perhaps, also revitalisingly, excitement. Because at the end of this gruelling campaign, we have the two best teams.

The stadium has been dressed as best it can be without a throbbing mass of humanity. The lightship is spectacular and hopefully looks as good on telly as it does at the ground.

It’s normally a bit chilly and wet but it is dry for now. Please let there be the finale the fans deserve, and the players too. They have earned it.

Last season St Helens coasted to victory against Salford Red Devils at Old Trafford under Justin Holbrook.

Fast forward 13 months and Saints are 80 minutes from retaining their title only this time under a new boss.

Tonga boss Kristian Woolf took over a side that many had dubbed one of the best of the Super League era.

And in an interrupted season, Woolf steadily guided them to another Grand Final, but can he make it a perfect debut season?

Wigan v St Helens (20:00 GMT)

    Adrian LamImage source, Rex Features

Having initially joined his former club on a temporary one-season basis in 2019, Adrian Lam has stuck around and picked up some silverware for his trouble.

His first campaign was meant to be his only one. The Australian former Wigan player returned to the club to take the helm ahead of former club legend Shaun Edwards crossing codes to take over from 2020.

But Edwards changed his mind, leading to Lam remaining at the DW Stadium for a further season.

Despite the coronavirus interrupting the campaign, Lam steered his side to the League Leaders' Shield but, with his current deal ending at the end of this term, will he stay on further after tonight's final?

Tonight's final features two of the 13-man code's biggest rivals for the biggest game of the domestic season.

Did you know that St Helens and Wigan share a neighbourly enmity that stretches back well over a century, one which gave rise to the sporting 'derby' after the 19th Earl of Derby bestowed the fixture with his title?

My rugby league-mad colleague Matt Newsum is in position for BBC Radio 5 Live sports extra, the wonderful duo of Jack Dearden and Trevor Hunt are there for BBC Radio Manchester and Phil Kinsella and Ian Chisnall are in the hot seat for BBC Radio Merseyside.

Magic Weekend will also return to Newcastle's St James' Park across the weekend of 29-30 May.

Clubs will play 13 home matches in a 27-game regular season, including the Magic Weekend, with the full fixture list released in January.

Wigan v St Helens (20:00 GMT)

    Ade GardnerImage source, Rex Features

One man who knows what it's like to play in this fixture is Ade Gardner.

The former St Helens winger knows all too well what the expectations are like when his former side met Wigan.

"The pressure going into those games means it's a completely different week. When I started at Saints in 2001, one thing they said when I signed was 'make sure you beat Wigan'," Gardner told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"There was a definite change in atmosphere and feel leading into the game. It's massive.

"There's a huge rivalry between the two clubs so the pressure and atmosphere is massive."
