"England are getting booed as they come out but they're going to thrive on this. I feel the England forward pack will win the day, there's too much power."

So then, Scotland's response to defeat last weekend was to drop captain Kelly Brown. Scapegoat, or tactical change? Only interim coach Scott Johnson truly knows.

Debutant Chris Fusaro replaces Brown at open-side flanker while the other two changes see Tommy Seymour make his Six Nations debut in the place of injured Glasgow Warriors team-mate Sean Maitland on the wing, while centre Matt Scott is promoted from the bench.

There's another notable charge on the bench - second row Richie Gray, tipped to be world class a year ago - is dropped. His replacement? Younger brother Jonny. Sporting fratricide - you suspect Lady Macbeth would have approved of such machinations.

"I thought Danny Care was having his best game last week against France before he was taken off. Taking off Care and Dylan Hartley hit England's game. I just hope today they take players off if their replacements are going to make a big difference."

"It's not about my players repaying anyone but themselves after last week's defeat to France. It was difficult initially to pick them back up and hopefully they can take out their frustration on Scotland."

On the Murrayfield pitch: "It's the same as it was yesterday when we trained on it although it's a bit wetter. It's the same for both teams. You have to win in the rain and win in the dry."

The Red Hot Chilli Pipers set up shop right in the middle of the pitch, and every foot stomp sunk deep into the muddy turf. The pitch seems to have the consistency of a sticky chocolate brownie. Adjectives added to vocab for game include stodgy, stolid and static.

    Chief sports writer at Murrayfield

"Out on the pitch - parasitic worms, anti-parasitic worm garlic treatments and all - the bagpipe-heavy Red Hot Chilli Pipers are working through their own version of Don't Stop Believin'.

"Quite how many of Scotland's supporters here have actually started believing is a moot point - I've barely met a Scot all day who thinks their side can win the Calcutta Cup this evening. Do Journey know something that the Murrayfield crowd don't?"

The rain has apparently abated in Edinburgh, so just the strong wing and heavy pitch to contend with. Our man on the scene says "the pitch is pretty muddy in parts and looks like it will cut up, particularly around the halfway line".

"It was a tough decision to drop (captain) Kelly Brown. Kelly's a great human being but I felt the mix would be better with the team I selected. These things have to happen. Chris Fusaro (debutant) deserves a run out, his regional form has been good."

"I'm not surprised England are unchanged, the guys deserve another chance. To drop players would have been difficult. They need to pay back the faith Stuart Lancaster showed by selecting them."

Both teams started with defeat on the first weekend - Scotland were brushed aside by table toppers Ireland while England went down in a thriller to a France.

England's reaction to defeat was to name on unchanged starting XV and replacements bench for the first time in Stuart Lancaster's tenure as head coach.

Scotland, on the other hand, unceremoniously dumped captain Kelly Brown out of their 23-man squad entirely. Harsh - just like the Scottish winter.

    Scotland and England fans

After last week's classic against France anyone expecting England's backline to once again light up the early evening winter gloom may well be in for disappointment.

Today's visitors have scored only one try in the last four Calcutta Cup games at Murrayfield - Charlie Hodgson's charge down in Stuart Lancaster's first match in charge in 2012.

That may sound bad but during that time Scotland have scored precisely no tries whatsoever.

But it's not all about tries in a game like this. They're mere fripperies, pleasant adornments on a day like this - victory is the only prize.

So the big Celtic clash turned out to be a one-sided stroll for the home side - a good omen for the Scots perhaps. Many thanks to Neil, I'm James Standley and I'll take you through to the Calcutta Cup and beyond.

Batten down the hatches, a storm is coming...

"The best team won and credit is due to Ireland. But we have still got three games left. We won the Championship last year with four wins and that's still achievable this year. The dressing room is pretty calm. We have to re-group next week and it's going to be a test of character to bounce back in two weeks against France."

"Tactically Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt said let's kick the ball away, take all the steam out of this Wales physicality. The big Welsh backs were running all the time but never getting the space they've been used to having."

Alex Murray:, external What a fantastic physical and tactical performance from Ireland. Absolutely dominated every aspect of the Wales game. Flawless.

Zachary Osborne:, external Ireland deservedly win, tactics spot on. However, Wales didn't help themselves by making countless silly errors.

John Lenihan:, external Complete domination, not seen such effective rolling maul since early eighties!

    Jonathan Davies
Former Wales fly-half on BBC One

"Wales were totally out-muscled. Plan A didn't work and unfortunately they didn't have another game plan. There was total domination of ball play by Ireland. It was difficult to stop."

Ireland captain Paul O'Connell on BBC One asked if he was surprised by the result: "Very much surprised. I think we did really well in the first half, our discipline was excellent and Jonathan Sexton's kicking was excellent.

"In conditions like this when you get a small bit of a lead and the other team has to play it becomes tough for them. I'm really surprised by the result in the magnitude of the scoreline but it's great for us."

Gareth Thomas:, external Very disappointing from Wales. Dull but effective tactics from Ireland. They should win the Six Nations if they play like this.

Mark Telfer:, external Wales - Mike Phillips has won you games and lost you games. This time he's totally got it wrong and lost it in a big way for you.

James Smurthwaite:, external Kicking is often seen as the bane of modern rugby, but Sexton's performance today has proven how effective and watchable it can be.
