  1. SIN BIN (Dunbar)published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

England come within inches of their second try and once again Jonny May shows what a threat he is at full gallop. Billy Vunipola gets things rolling with a big carry and sweet offload and Billy Tweveltrees releases May down the wing, but he is tackled just short.

Scotland centre Alex Dunbar is yellow carded for holding on at the resulting ruck and it's looking dire for the hosts.

Dylan:, external Don't understand why Scotland don't use Hogg more on attack! At first receiver or bring him into the line. A weapon not being used.

Edward Green:, external Murrayfield pitch is currently being ploughed, however not in favour of synthetic pitches; takes something out of the game.

Richard Coombs:, external Sadly Scotland can't perform internationally - doesn't matter who coaches them! Denton is their best player by a mile.

  3. MISSED PENALTY (Farrell)published at 18:05 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Owen Farrell tiptoes through the bog but pulls a simple kick to the left of the sticks. The pitch has definitely got inside his head.

  4. Postpublished at 18:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Jonny May gloriously weaves his way into the Scottish 22 and the hosts are once again under the cosh. They eventually halt the move but at the resulting scrum the blue scrum collapses like a distressed souffle and Owen Farrell will go for goal.

  5. HANDBAGSpublished at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Tom Wood and Ryan Wilson have a go at each other and then their mates all get involved. A scrum cap gets ripped off but there's not much to it really. Brian Moore's back to the Macbeth quotes - "full of sound and fury signifying nothing" - hard to disagree with that.

    Scotland lose ANOTHER line-out.

Scottish hooker Ross Ford looks gun shy and when he floats a throw to the middle of the line-out the magnificent Courtney Lawes pinches it - the Northampton second row is having a superb all-round game.

Ford is promptly replaced by Scott Lawson. It was the merciful thing to do.

Murrayfield has the least well received pitch since Alan Partridge tried to sell Monkey Tennis to the BBC.

"One of the main things is our discipline, that's killing us. We need to score first and get some possession and territory. Against a good side we need possession in their half if we're going to claw our way back into this."

  9. Get Involvedpublished at 17:51 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Charlie Behan:, external This is a poor game of wasted possession as kickers badly place high balls. Phases please; no more kicking.

Jeff Hull:, external The question that needs asking is where would a Scottish try come from? Power? Pace? Set-Piece? No platform.

Tom Jebb:, external England deserve their lead against the Scottish. Unlucky not to get a second try just before half time.

At the moment it is the pitch that's offering the greatest resistance to England - here's what some of the fans make of it on Facebook.

Alastair McNair: I assume the Murrayfield groundsman work has been inspired by a recent trip to the First World War battlefields.

Paul Stevens: The game's the product and it's ruined by the pitch. Can't kick, scrum and it limits running rugby. Not pretty for fans.

Douglas: For Scotland, that's a bowling green

Chris Etchells: Disgraceful that the pitch is in such a poor state when you consider the money now involved in professional rugby.

Paul Smith:, external Pitch is spoiling game a little. Affecting every aspect of match but Calcutta Cup matches aren't supposed to be pretty.

Paul Simpson:, external Nothing wrong with the pitch at Murrayfield. Pitches used to be like that many moons ago. It's a great leveller.

Sharon:, external Totally agree all pitch conditions have been bad in past couple of years - weather related? I do prefer real grass and mud though!

    Tom Fordyce
    Chief sports writer at Murrayfield

"England's half, and they have barely had to go past third gear. Scotland haven't given themselves a chance - they conceded eight penalties and lost three line-outs in the first half, and if those sub-plots continue in the second half, the match can only go one way."

    Sir Clive Woodward
Former England coach on BBC One

"Scotland boss Scott Johnson has his work cut out. Scotland are not doing the basics well and have been so poor. England haven't had to break sweat. They're playing quite well but aren't having to do anything spectacular."

    Brian Moore
Former England hooker on BBC One

"Scotland for all their endeavour have not had any cutting edge. England could have had another try and look comfortable. Scotland have it all to do."

Huge let-off for Scotland. Owen Farrell breaks clear and finds the supporting Luther Burrell, but the big Northampton centre is finally dragged down just short by Sean Lamont.

Oof, that could have been game over. England look by far the more threatening team with Scotland powderpuff in comparison and if Burrell could have gone just another couple of yards, it would have put this match to bed.

As it is England are in almost total control and with a 13-point advantage there looks like being only one winner as it is.

England fan anthem Swing Low Sweet Chariot rings round Murrayfield and is met by a storm of booing from the home supporters.

The visitors are back on the attack inside the Scottish 22 but Danny Care's kick through is blocked and the hosts survive.

Scotland lose another line-out - hooker Ross Ford looks like he's got to shoot an apple off someone's head he's so nervous. The hosts just cannot generate any momentum at the moment.

  19. Get Involvedpublished at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Hannah Dawson:, external Murrayfield is turning into a mudbath. Not exactly international standard.

Matt Oswin:, external Pitch is terrible. Surprised the measures they will be taking are not already in place.

Mark Hetherington:, external That Murrayfield pitch condition is a disgrace! Looks like a replay of the 1993 game! How was it allowed to get this bad!?

  20. Postpublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

England lock Courtney Lawes flies out of the line to scythe down his man and Chris Robshaw is with him to win the penalty as Scotland hold on.

The hosts look ineffective in attack and vulnerable in defence. Not a good combination.
