So close, and yet so far, for England.

Yes, there was only one point in it at the end, and yes, England have clearly come a long way under Stuart Lancaster.

But when it came down to it, when the All Blacks really cut loose, England looked unable to deal with what was being thrown at them.

New Zealand have their hands on the Hillary Shield, but can England improve enough in seven days to beat the world champions in the third and final Test?

Join me to find out next Saturday, and make sure you're here on Tuesday as well when England's second string face the Crusaders in Christchurch.

One down, two to go - enjoy the rest of your sporting super Saturday.

"I said confidently New Zealand could win, they do it consistently. When they turned up the tempo in the second half, it shows they have plenty up their sleeves.

"We saw moments for about 30 minutes of that second half that showed the serious team that they are and the ability they have to create opportunities. I think we will see them one step better next week."

"It's tough to take but England have to take positives. The team has come so far under Stuart Lancaster and to play against the best team in the world in their back garden and only lose two games by six points is a massive credit to them."

England centre Billy Twelvetrees on BBC Radio 5 live: "We took the positives from last week and put some good stuff together in the first half but New Zealand really stepped it up and we made a few crucial errors. We are devastated because we are leaving chances out on the field and to lose tonight is disappointing, but credit to New Zealand - that's why they are world champions."

New Zealand coach Steve Hansen speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a great game of rugby. There was a lot of calmness at half-time, we knew we were in an arm-wrestle and just had to hang in there. We thought we did enough in the first half to be in front, but we hadn't taken the opportunities.

"I don't think there is a big difference between the sides but in the heat of the battle, we managed to get things to go our way. Both sides can be proud of their performances."

Ian:, external The score flattered England. Try wouldn't have been awarded if ref had asked the right question. Last score didn't matter, game won.

Kevin Poynor:, external Tuilagi should either start as centre or be on the bench as an impact player. However, well done England not a bad performance.

captain pugwash:, external Not fooled by the fightback, this game was over long ago. All Blacks too good.

"I would have expected Dylan Hartley, Courtney Lawes and Billy Vunipola to come on very early in the second half. It was almost 20 minutes in before they actually came on. In that time, Savea and Smith scored a try.

"I think that trio should have been on from the start of the second half. Had they been on and been in control of the forward play, it might not have resulted in those two tries."

England coach Stuart Lancaster speaking to Sky Sports: "You've got to take your hat off to New Zealand - to come back into the game was great character shown by the boys.

"We were playing well in the first half, we felt we were creating opportunities but we kicked loosely to the back three too often."

So, New Zealand win the three-match series after taking a decisive 2-0 lead.

They came out after the interval and blew England away with 30 minutes of dazzling, skilful and powerful rugby in Dunedin, and although England managed to get back within a point at the death, the All Blacks were more convincing winners than the scoreboard suggests.

When the All Blacks turn up the heat - as they have done immediately after the break in both Tests so far - England struggle to live with them - can they learn the lessons before the third and final Test next week?

Nick in Cheltenham: Maybe one day England will learn to take their chances when they are dominating.

Andrew: When the All Blacks turn it on, no team in world rugby can live with them. They have an extra gear where their intensity, handling and decision-making is just superior in every single way. They are simply untouchable when they're in the mood.

Adam in London: Twelvetrees has been found out, he is not good enough but to be fair, both centres have been shocking! Their tackling is terrible, no technique, all far too high. England are too obsessed with a second ball player at 12. Look at the best team in the world, New Zealand, they have Nonu, he is not a ball player.

"England will be kicking themselves. All they did in the last period was hold onto ball, apply pressure and keep New Zealand in their 22. That's all we had to do. We let New Zealand back in with some poor kicking. This England side is very good and I think they'll push New Zealand very hard in the third Test. It's no consolation, but what a game."

    Wow, what a Test.

For half an hour after the break New Zealand were magnificent, but whether they eased off, or England managed to regain the composure and intent they showed in the first half, the visitors came within a point of avoiding defeat.

The world champions were deserved winners, but England are getting closer every match - on the scoreboard at least.

They may have lost, but no-one can doubt the character of this England team, and they have one last crack as they win a scrum penalty and kick to the corner.

Chris Robshaw wins the line-out but when England go wide Billy Twelvetrees' pass does not go to hand.

No matter, they recycle, go again and when Marland Yarde's floated pass finds Manu Tuilagi, the wrecking ball finally gets the chance to show what he can do.

A hitch-kick and burst of acceleration sees him put Mike Brown clear down the touchline and the full-back draws the cover before sending replacement wing Chris Ashton over for the score, which Owen Farrell converts.

England defiant to the last. They win a penalty at a New Zealand scrum and Owen Farrell is given the chance to clear, but he does not find touch and Ben Smith returns it with interest.

He's a Dunedin boy, and what a match he's had in his first outing at full-back for the hosts after previous caps at centre and on the wing.

"You've got to give credit to New Zealand who made mistakes in the first half. After the break, they have been a lot more skilful, particularly fielding the high ball, and they are really putting the pressure on."
